Saw Dreamgirls last night and I wasn't expecting much given the reviews I've read but I thought it was very good. I think it is a film that benefits from being seen in a theater with a crowd. The audience reaction last night was really fun and enhanced the experience.
The look and energy of it was great and I can't cite a single bad performance. Even Eddie Murphy, who generally irritates me, was excellent. Jennifer Hudson lives up to the hype--just give her the Oscar now. There wasn't a dry eye around me after her version of "And I Am Telling You". I enjoyed the humor of the film too--the bit about the "white" version of "Cadillac Car" and James Thunder Earle's first performance in Miami were particularly amusing.
On the minus side, some of the music was eh but I thought that about the show too. The bits that attempted to put the story in historical context were pretty ham handed and it was a bit long but I think that is an illness most modern movies suffer from, alas.
Overall, though, I'd see it again.
