Hey guys
I recently was lucky enough to pick up two very nice vintage suits in a local charity shop where I live in Yorkshire. The little bit of research I've been able to do has revealed the tailors that made the suit were liquidated in 1950 and although they intended to trade under the name JA Winpenny afterwards there is nothing to be found about them, leading me to believe that they didn't get up and running again.
The first suit which is Huddersfield cloth and double breasted looks late 40's (?) but I'm struggling with the single breasted one. The waistcoat is cut very high and there's no vertical buttonhole for an albert chain. I would of said 50's but figuring they probably wouldn't have been producing anything post 1950/1 I'm not sure. Any guesses or thoughts would be much appreciated!
Cheers
SD

Hi SD, where are you located in Yorkshire? My grandfather came over to Australia from Halifax, though he was born in Filey. My family name is Pudsey, and I've been to visit Halifax and Pudsey - man I dig that history!

I found this tidbit of info on a search:

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/39178/page/1529/data.pdf

It states that although the business was dissolved between Frank and Harry Winpenny in 1951, that Frank would continue trading under the JA Winpenny name. The suit with the DB wasitcoat looks 1950s to me, just going off the trouser leg width and the lapels on the jacket, but i'm not 100% certain.

I also found an entry in the phone directory for a JA Winpenny at 16 Cloth Hall St, Huddersfield (now that sounds like a place where a tailoring business ought to be!) with a contact number of 0148 442 0176. I guess you could always try ringing and see who answers!

Good luck!

Hi there Benny
I'm from and live in Huddersfield so a couple miles from Halifax. In fact both my kids were born in Halifax royal infirmary. Yeah I could only find the same info as you and the number is a random dead end I'm afraid.
Either way theyre nice suits and the green one is pretty much un worn
Whilst I think on, I see quite a bit of local vintage stuff made in Halifax (caps and jackets mainly). If you'd like l can keep an eye out for you?
Cheers

Bummer about the dead-end number. Thanks for the kind offer mate, would love to know if you find any interesting caps in a size 56 (US 7). I've got 30 years worth of collected 1930s and 40s suits and I reckon if I introduce another jacket into my house the missus will go ballistic on me!

I love the fabric of your suits and you can just see the quality in them. They're a great find!
