This is for the history buffs around here. Can anyone tell me when manufacturers of the G-1 Navy jacket changed from stenciling "USN" on the back of the collar to punching the letters in the storm flap? Also, have G-1's always been made in goatskin, or were there early incarnations in horsehide?

The perforation of the wind flap began in the early sixties with the first of the MIL-J-7823s, but many of the stenciled jackets weren't G-1s. They were M-422s and M-422As. There were never any horsehide Navy jackets, although many E-series G-1s are cowhide.
