Until its recent closure Landau's of Princeton was one of the premier suppliers of woolen goods in the United States. It was also utterly Ivy, stocking Harris tweeds, Irish Aran sweaters, beautiful Scottish cashmeres, and Schneider's loden coats... as well as a wonderful assortment of scaves and Princeton clothing.
This beautiful coat/jacket is every inch a Landau item.
It is cut from a beautiful tweedy woolen cloth, which is far more subtle and lovely than my pictures show. It has a very dark charcoal/black base, with fleckings of blue throughout This is accented with subtle vertical striping in the rich purple of Scottish heather and rich forest green.
Almost certainly dating from the 1980s, this has the classic preppy silhouette of that decade: Slightly wider shoulders, with longer, wider lapels. The coat/jacket closes with a two button front.
In line with the 1980s preppy fascination with All Things Upper Class English (Think of Chariots of Fire, Brideshead Revisited, and Ralph Lauren) this lovely jacket has a half-beat at the rear, reminiscent of British tweed hacking jackets.
This is, of course, fully lined.
It was Union Made in the USA--almost certainly from Scottish wool.
It is in Very Good condition. It is slightly rumpled from being stored folded in a cedar chest--easily fixed with a press. There is a small snag hole in the lining near the hem, as shown--an easy fix, or else ignored. And there is some discolorating in the lining at the armholes.
Items from Landau are always absolutely first quality, and this is no exception. New, this was a very, very expensive garment indeed.
So, how about just $39, or offer, boxed, shipped, and insured in the USA?
