Glasgow Homberg

Picked up this beauty in a Glasgow vintage shop on Saturday afternoon. I paid the princely sum of GBP20... this style of hat being much less popular than a fedora, I tend to find I can pick up outstanding examples for comparatively little. I believe this particular hat is either beaver or a beaver blend of some sort. It certainly has the feel of a beaver hat, judging from my (admittedly limited) experience.

Any suggestions as to age?

Which shop were you in?

I agree with you on Homburgs, they aren't fashionable so you can find a lot more for a lot less - and quite a classic look for this side of the pond if put with the right outfit!

I like to wear them with semi-formal wear, or with a lounge suit at weddings and the like. That said, I don't see them as to be confined to more formal environs - I'm a sucker for the look of a homberg with a fedora style bash, worn at a bit of a rakish angle with a more casual ensemble, a la Mick Collins. This one came from Starry Starry Night in the Hillhead area. There are a load of great new vintage shops round there and on Great Western Road since I was last up. Little available in my size, unfortunately, but some lovely stock nonetheless and uniformly reasonably priced. Markedly cheaper than eBay in most cases.

Have to agree on the rakish angle and fedora bash!
It's funny, I'd probably put Starry Starry Night down as the least interesting of Glasgow's vintage shops for gents (it is pretty good for the ladies), but you've found a smasher there! Did you go to Mr. Ben's? The chap in charge there has a lot more stuff out the back for the more discerning patron. I've got some lovely stuff from him in the past just by mentioning what I was looking for - often he has disappeared and come back with something fantastic! :)

Mr Ben's? I'm not sure, hit quite a few places and don't quite recall all the names...

Very nice Homburg (as in Bad Homburg) ! My guess would be 1930s but it is tough with Homburgs.

That was my guess based on the lack of liner, and my feeling that it is beaver (not that either of those things is conclusive, but compared to other similar hats I've seen...). They don't seem to have changed as much as a style over time, though, as the fedora.
