Yesterday I posted an old Stetson 6 cord western style hat, haven't nailed down the model yet, but reason to believe it’s from the late 40’s early 50’s.
The owner had an awesome story behind how he got it.
First here are some better specs on the hat.
5 1/2 crown
2 7/8 bound brim
embroidered last drop liner (no plastic or onion skin)
“**x beaver” embroidered in liner
stars in upper left of crest
No **x designation on front of sweatband
“1/2” keyhole tag
Re-order # H_270
Any additional info or insights would be appreciated!
Okay Now the fun Part:
I purchased the hat from an older gentleman in his mid 70’s. He says the family legend goes as follows.
His Dad was a tv producer in the 60’s/70’s and rubbed shoulders with a lot of Hollywood celebrities. One night he was at a party and was seated with a group including Ted Turner and John Wayne. Ted always had a group of ladies with him and that night was no different. One of Ted’s girls was wearing this hat and John Wayne complimented her on it. Ted takes the hat right off the girl’s head and throws it at John, says “it’s yours now”
John says “Hell Ted I’ve got a hundred hats I don’t need another” and tosses it to this guys Dad, who kept it as a keepsake.
In my mind I’d like to think it was one of Ted’s personal hats that the girl put on before coming to the party or maybe Ted wore it to the party and put it on her head. It seems like a thing that could be true? .. who knows!
To add to this, my wife’s grandfather passed away last week at 89, he was a 3 time world champion bull rider in the 1950’s and absolutely idolized John Wayne, in fact locally they called him the John Wayne of Louisiana.. tomorrow is my wife’s birthday and last night I shared the story with her and said try it on. It fit her perfect and I said that’s a heavenly birthday gift from your Grandad you’ll have the rest of your life. She was so happy she cried.
I don’t know how true the story is or not, but I know her grandad would have loved it and by god it made an impression on us!
