I am a bit of a collector . . .

After being here for six months, isn't it time to begin a thread re Hat History & How to Find it?

I will be dealing with only Toronto, Ontario Canada, but this type of search may also be of use within your own city.

The first thing that one requires is a hat, one that has a name and ideally a city. This will work better the older

the hat is, for reasons that will become apparent shortly.

Internet Archive (See below) allows the ability to view most of The Toronto City Directories which were published between

1900 & 1922, while The Toronto Public Library has a similar ability to show 1833 through to 1899 and has many of the

Goad's Fire Insurance Atlas', with The Toronto Archives having in it's inventory historical streetscape pics.

What does all of this mean?

As an example:

My "new" hat has on it's sweatband "Beaver Quality", "MANLEIGH CUSTOM HATTERS - 352 College St. TORONTO."

From there I went to the web (Toronto City Directories) and did a search - 1900 - 1922. No luck.

I did write at the beginning that I was a "bit of a collector". Within my collection of "Dead Wood" - read "books",

I have my own copies of later City Directories (as does any City Library where you may live.) MANLEIGH was not

in the 1925, 1933, 1942 versons, nor were they in my 1944 Bell Telephone Book, but they were in the 1950 book!

Their place of business differed from the one noted above, but within their company's name listing in another section

of the Directory, the owner's name & address became known.

Now knowing both addresses, I continued at The Toronto Public Library and began a search of the last Goad's Atlas (1916)

to view the building's placement & footprint, after which at the Toronto Archives pic section (typed - in College Street)

in the hope of seeing the actual property. (Before/during/after their occupancy.)

So there you have it; keep digging!
