Looks like a nice "stingy" brim Stetson.

Take a look under the sweat band inside the hat. Take and post photos of any labels there. They'll help the dating of this one.

Mid-to late 60s (possibly even 70s) stingy with an overwelt brim edge treatment. The liner tip and size tag are the clues I'm using. That Stetson logo in the liner tip shows up early to mid-60s. The square size tag, as well. I don't think they introduced metric sizing until at least the 80s.

Not a whole lot of value, likely, as it's the older hats and styles that command the market.

You never know about pricing as sometimes hats go for way over the average price and sometimes they sell for less or not at all. The stingy brim and the diminutive dimensions would make me think it should be in the $25-40 range. Stetson’s quality was in free fall for at least 10 years before this hat was made. I’d place this hat with the others: mid-1960s through the 1970s.

A friend of mine has a Resistol "Ty Murray" collection western hat 7 3/8 black with no xxx designations in it. Is it fur felt or wool or a blend? I see an item # RWO1750740HSHTB and a UPC code of 7 95214 10543 5 says "Resistol Self Conforming" "Made in Texas USA" Any info available from you good people?

He only wore it once in a while, and always kept it in its original box. My hat friend, Lobo, thinks it may be from the 50's and is in the style called Tijuana. I'd love any input!

I’ll let others who have personal experience give you more details, but it’s a nice hat. It’s the Stetson version of the Dobbs brand Gay Prince.

There should be another label on the felt behind the leather sweatband. It should be right next to (usually to the right) of the re-order tag shown in your photos. Can you add a photo of that label?

Great hat. It’s a casual hat as opposed to a dress hat and it’s a bit showy….I like it! Great piece of family history.

I'm trying to decide if I should sell it to someone that would appreciate it. It's far too big for me. So finding out info about it would be beneficial I guess. Like I've read in other posts, there's little to no info about this hat or its history, so I really appreciate your input.

Well, it’s clean and it’s in a great size so I’m sure you can sell it. It’s not a grail hat for most, but it’s desireable. Stetson used the 3X Beaver Quality designation more commonly on western hats, but it’s been used on just about every sort of hat. It was usually a firmer and denser felt, but there is a lot of variation. At the time there was the Royal that was the bottom quality fur felt (still pretty nice in the older hats), the Royal De Luxe (a definite step up) and then the 3X. Not all hats were offered in all three of these felts and 3X was by no means the highest. I might be off a bit, but when the Royal was a $10 hat the Royal Deluxe was $12.50 and the 3X was $15.

The Tijuana, like the more common Dobbs Gay Prince, has a self-felt hat band and whip stitching on the band and on the brim edge. The style has a following, but it’s more specialized and often doesn’t sell for as much as other hats of the era with more traditional appointments. Your hat is very clean so it might bring more than some of the others that sold recently on eBay.

It’s a fur felt hat, but it’s not a 100% beaver hat. Stetson has never told us what exactly “3X” meant, and the meaning has definitely changed over the years. I’m not great on dating hats, but I’d say yours was late 1940s or early 1950s. I’m sure other more knowledgeable folks will chime in in the coming hours or days.

As a general practice, we don’t usually provide price estimations, and to be honest there is a lot of variation in the market with some hats priced right not selling and other going for way more than the anticipated priced based on comparable sales.

You're friend Lobo is generally right about the age, early 50s or so. Brent's explanation of the style of hat is accurate and, yes, the 3X is a higher quality hat used on numerous styles of dress and western models.

If you do an advanced search on eBay for "Gay Prince Hat," and check the Sold Listings filter, it will give you a handful of examples of what a hat like this may sell for. There are even a couple of Stetson Tijuanas listed as well. It's a fairly desirable size.

It looks like it was maybe a series of hats and not just one model? I see old listing for them in straw as well as felt. At least some of the felt versions were sited as 4X Beaver, but I don’t have any way to verify that.

The tags might have been removed, but it’s been a law since the 1930s that wool content had to be included as part of any items labeling. There isn’t a similar law for fur.

It always bugs me when folks jump on forums only to get advice on selling something…but alas I have to be that guy. I’m not a collector, I only really have one decent hat, the rest are junk. Honestly not too happy about having to sell it. But I’m in a pickle and unfortunately have to get rid of anything I have that is worth anything. I never bothered learning about this hat cause I liked it and that was enough for me. There are very few labels on the band or the box, I’ve attached pics of everything. Can anyone tell me what year this looks like or any other helpful info? I collect guitars so I’m very particular about making sure to provide as much and as accurate of information as I can when selling since people can’t put their hands on it. Any help is appreciated, please excuse me for being that guy.
