Tomorrow I'm heading to a friend's wedding reception. Being the indecisive human I am, I'm debating whether to wear a fedora or a homburg. Is one more appropriate than the other for a wedding? I know you're not supposed to "out-dress" the groom, and I feel like a homburg might do that. This guy ain't exactly Frank Sinatra...
Forget about "right" and "wrong". In most circles you'd have to pass around fliers, explaining the differences between homburg and fedora. Wearing a nice hat, you'll probably be among the top-three best dressed for the occasion. To the bride and groom the day is supposed to be the most beautiful and happy in their life. Hopefully they will remember the event - not the clothes of the guests. Wear whatever hat that makes you feel the best. Then you automatically contribute the most to a good, memorable atmosphere. Just my two cents ...
The gentlemen are, of course, correct. I tend to wear a homburg with a lounge suit to such occasions myself... though to qualify that: given that most people won't know the difference, I'd not go overboard by taking a very precious hat that you'll spend all night worrying about - especially if the event is indoors....
