I've never heard or read this story before. I'd be interested to know whether the sub commander was aware he was shooting at a hospital ship. I'll do a little digging and post a query on subsim.com where the submarine enthusiasts hang out; somebody there will probably know.

Not that atrocities by the Japanese were unusual, of course...

That sub commander was proven to be a basterd. Considering that the Centaur was clearly marked and lit, he had to know.

Postwar, LtCdr Nakagawa denies sinking CENTAUR, but serves four years in the Sugamo Prison after pleading guilty to the machine-gunning of merchant crew survivors in the Indian Ocean while CO of I-37.
