Back to the original question...

Magus, back to the original question, did you consider casters? They are available in all sorts of old-fashioned styles, various sizes and materials, including brass. Here is an example:

You can get them here: http://www.van****s.com/product/02005555/

These would be very functional for a travel case, especially yours, which is very sturdy, and therefore not particularly light to carry. With casters, it could be used like those wheeled totes that everyone pulls around airports these days.

I hope this is helpful.

How about something simple - small brass drawer-pulls. I'm thinking round/sphere/ball ones 1/2" diameter max. A small hole drilled in the bottom, nut attached inside with the excess threads cut & sanded off. Probably use 3 for stability - using 4 or more and one of them is usually slightly different size and the case would rock or rattle. Being rounded, you COULD drag or slide it with little fear of scratching whatever it's sitting on.

Interseting thoughts all. I considered the drawer pulls but they are hollow and I wasn't sure how they would hold up without denting.

The castor idea....hmmmmm....standing up I think it would be too unstable....but another thought comes to mind...strolling through the airport...leash in hand.......

Depends on where you shop, I guess, but Restoration Hardware and Home Depot have solid-cast ones. I know because we've been looking to replace the pulls on a table recently.

Man, I think I jumped in way too late on this one! Hey Magus, did anyone in this long thread suggest that you afix felt to the bottom of the box? I think it would be a nice touch, considering most products stored in it will be felt. It won't take away from your shelf space, but will make it a smooth sliding operation on and off the closet shelf. I would felt the bottom about 1/4 inch in from the edges. Some sort of felt that is not thick and is dense, like used on the bottoms of furniture legs.

To keep it even cheaper, you could use something like this:
