Lapel Altering

How old is the suit jacket? Why would you want to mess with it? I get the impression from looking at (way too much) Ebay that '50s suits and coats are plentiful.

I'm guessing 1970s. Conductor Uniform jackets prior to the late 60s, had narrower lapels, and generally 4 buttons, as opposed to the 3 on this one.

If you went somewhat thin on lapel you could shave the whole boutonniere whole with those giant lapels.
