My Leathertogs arrived in a box that weighs 1kg (990gr), so it was 4.5kg boxed, 3.44kg unboxed.
I have another jacket sized box here that is slightly thinner and weighs 750gr.

If your SD was 4. something kg boxed i doubt it actually is as heavy as you think it is unboxed...
Same for the Natal, if it was 4.2kg with the box it was max 3.5kg unboxed IMO

You should get a small scale like mine, it was around a tenner on eBay and its worth having IMO.

No, no, it was just the jacket, bunched up in a ball, placed on a post office scale. Came out at a breath over 4 kg. Let's say 4 kg. Natal was 4.2 kg with the box, can't say how heavy it really was but Tony say it's one of the heaviest jackets he's ever had. My first Natal, the cafe racer, that thing was 4.6 kg and that I had a chance to check several times. I never, EVER had a jacket that heavy and nothing that even got close. It was also one of my favorite jackets in the world and I deeply regret moving it. It was badly made though sturdy as a tank but the leather was just... It was something else.
Anyway, while none of my Vanson jackets proved to be all that weight-wise, the SD is definitely a beastly jacket. Like I said, I think it's the kidney panel and the pockets are lined in heavy denim but regardless, it's still very heavy.

This confirms one thing to me:
People who don't have scales usually think their jackets are much heavier than they actually are.

@JMax ,care to weigh your LW and add to the list? I'm sure i remember you saying you were getting scales too.

My most recent LW, the Ryder in black 3.5 oz horsehide, would probably be right up your alley. I would compare the weight and thickness of the hide to my Good Wear Ventura in Shinki horsehide. If anything the LW is probably a bit thinner and it is really beginning to show some beautiful grain and character.

Yes, I always weigh the hangers first.
There seems to be a variability of about 30g between same hangers (got a big batch ages ago as I knew I would need them )

Try turning the scales on with the empty hanger hanging already, it should tare when it starts and will then show -xxx when you remove the hanger.


Interesting that my J-23 is around 3oz, but still much heavier than an Aero CXLHH that is supposed to be 3-3.5oz.
I think it kinda shows the limitation of using a unit of weight to describe thickness...
It would only make sens to do so if all leather had the same weight per specific thickness, which isn't the case.

My CHP comes in a little over 8 lbs according to a large digital postal scale at a warehouse I was working in last year. I could weigh the Ryder, but it would be using the bathroom scale technique which you advised is not terribly accurate. I may have to order a real scale so I can keep up with you guys here!

It used to be.
Now I divide the heavyweight to four categories.
1. The jacket feels heavy but not neccecery too thick : All 3-3.5 oz some times 4oz jacket. and Kadoya I had, weight 8.8 lbs.
2. The jacket feels not too heavy but leather is actually thick : Vanson dominator I had weight 7.8 lbs, soft and pliable but leather is super thick.
3. The jacket feels light but actually heavyweight : Schott p613s horween steerhide, probably because of weight distrubute well.
4. The jacket feels heavy and actually is heavyweight : LW 4oz plus cross zip jacket.

As a professional mechanic for 47 years, in recharging air conditioning's they require a precise amount of freon to be added. i used a freon scale to measure 4 jackets. Did not measure any of my LL goat or Cow Jackets or my Cal LAPD

Can you show us this scale? I'd imagine there is greater resolution than 1 or 2 dp?
