Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with personal ads, specifically online personals?

My roommate suggested I create a profile on okcupid.com to find a date for an upcoming formal Christmas party we're both going to. I don't know many people in Philadelphia, so I'm not totally opposed to the idea.

Anyway, what are your opinions on personal ads?

I know a few happy couples brought together by the internet, and my cousin just got married the other week to a man she met on a dating site...only to realize they'd gone to Sunday school together as kids.

So I'd say go for it, but I haven't worked up the nerve yet myself.

Around here I thought the term "dating" referred to the dating of an item, as in, was this hat made in 1934 or 1936?

But that doesn't help Polka Dot in finding an escort for the Christmas formal.

ok the only trouble is do we really want to breed!! Can the world take too many of us, or perhaps this will lead to world domination.....starting to sound good. An interesting evolution of species, what would the kids be like??

Man so many questions, mind you I'm all for world domination (says he as he strokes his pussy cat)

I found the community on OKcuid to be too young (though i'm 29) I had better luck on craigs list. i met somone and we dated about a year or longer. we are still friends but it didn't work out for other reasons.

I have met some good friends and activity partners (concertgoers, gaming friends, coffee friends, etc) on OK Cupid. My wife and I reconnected on a website (although we had known each other on a very superficial professional basis a few years before).

I take it the invitation stated, "Miss Polka Dot and Guest"?

I know people who have met wonderful companions online. My own experience is that the men (who admittedly I never met) sounded like they either didn't go anywhere that women gathered, or they weren't looking for sparkling conversation.

Off and on for quite some time.

In a couple of weeks I'm going to meet a few people from one online dating site. One woman collects vintage 1930's to 1950's vintage clothing. I'm looking forward to meeting her.

Thanks for your stories, everyone.

I should have described it differently--it's a relatively informal Christmas party for which everyone is encouraged to dress up. :)

As for the personal ad, I'm still undecided.

i had one experience with online personal adds and the gal i met was crazy! it spooked me so bad i was worried she would fit me with cement shoes. I still feel anything that gives a person a chance of meeting someone is aces in my book.

My experiences with personal ads came about when I moved cross country. I didn't have any NEGATIVE experiences per se, and met some nice men, but no one who was all that interesting. I would suggest trying eHarmony, as my friends have been going to eHarmony weddings lately. Seems to work.

Well, as far as online dating sites, I met my fiance on eHarmony. I highly recommend, I think there's something to their compatability tests, and the way they match you up!

I suppose I was an early adopter of online dating. In 1998 I moved to a new a city, and used (I think) Yahoo Personals to meet people. As for success, one of the women I met in 1998 is now married to me. We have a wonderful little boy (does anyone ever think their children are not wonderful?) and a second due in April. I've heard that the sites that use personality testing are more effecient, but I don't have any experience with them.
