A skate case, 15 x 11 x 5.5

The seller didn’t know what it was. These things were very common among my people in my early years. Mom & Pop’s Rolling Skating Rink (yes, that’s what it was called) was the Friday night place to be when my mom was a teenager. (She met both of her husbands there.) The rink was still going strong when I was a little kid. I hear from the few surviving friends and relatives still living around there that it had about run its course not long after we moved away.

Being a Canadian kid I knew how to ice skate. One Friday night I ventured into the city to a roller rink to try my hand at roller skating. Heard it was a good place to meet girls. Well it might have been had I not spent the greater part of the night either on my butt or picking myself up off the hardwood. I survived, bruised ego and butt and never tried it again.

I was born in Wisconsin, where the lakes freeze over, and spent most of my prepubescent life there. Ice skating was one of those “free” activities most of us kids did. It was indeed free for me and my siblings as we used hand-me-down skates, which typically didn’t fit well and whose blades were likely never sharpened.

I had thought I would never truly enjoy skating until my mother took pity and bought me a brand-spanking new pair of figure skates that actually fit. They were women’s skates that were dyed black. No more aching ankles!

I have never had a sprained ankle.....I swear it is because I spent so much time ice skating on them......struggling all those days to straighten my ankles I think strengthened them.

Lambskin jacket by Jez Elite thrifted for $40. This is a 20 year old jacket that looks new. I was impressed with the stitching, the design and the quality of the lambskin. The sheep collar is detachable. Two inside pockets. The lining is pristine. The hide is flawless. Shows no wear. Retailed for $1100 CAD. Fits me nicely so may keep it.
