If you're looking for a guaranteed result and want to preserve your denim jacket, consider taking it to a professional cleaner who can shrink it safely.
There is a well known method for shrinking raw denim, whether it's true or more likely a myth, I wouldn't know. Check the bathtub method:
You soak your jacket thoroughly.: Put it on and submerge yourself in the tub. Make sure the denim is fully soaked for at least 30 minutes. Move around: After you get out of the tub, gently stretch and move around whilst still wearing the wet jacket.
It was a method that I had heard of back in my student days, as I said, check it out first, students were well known for smoking wacky baccy so whether the bathtub method is a delusional, pot infused myth or not, who knows?
I’ve read about that approach with jeans, but also read that it wasn’t advised with jackets.

I pressed ahead with a cold wash today, with the jacket inside out and then hung it out to dry. It picked up a bit of a ridge from the hanger, but hopefully that will stretch back out over time. The size is where it should be now and there was very little loss of colour. Looking forward to wearing it regularly now and seeing how it changes over time.

My wife is very talented about fabrics, she makes most of our clothes, check the Hawaiian shirt thread to see some of her work.

My lady explained that Raw denim is typically made from 100% cotton and is known for its stiff feel and dark colour due to not being pre-washed or treated. It's a type of cotton twill fabric that can be woven with different weights and textures, which contribute to the fabric's unique character and fading patterns.

All cotton fabrics, especially when newly woven, are prone to shrinkage and should ideally be pre-shrunk before being used for sewing projects. This helps prevent unexpected size changes after washing the finished garment.

Raw rigid denim can be pre-shrunk or not, Sanforisation is the technique normally used to do this without causing fading or softening of the fabric. Sanforized denim jeans and jackets will shrink a little bit, up to a few percent, when washed in hot water, un-Sanforized (Shrink.to-fit in Levi's terminology) will shrink a lot more and the amount of shrinkage will depend more on the temperature of the wash than Sanforized denim.

Shrinkage is generally higher on the length than on the waist on jeans, jackets seem to shrink more evenly overall than jeans do.
