Smoke Damage Fix?

A friend of ours had a fire in his apartment day before yesterday. A newly installed ventilation fan shorted out. Luckily, the landlord (grandmother of another friend of ours) was home, but it looks like the entire structure's going to be a write-off. He's most upset because a 40s suit that belonged to his great-grandfather is in the closet of along with the rest of his smoke-damaged clothing. Right now, they're allowed to remove nothing until the insurance investigators come out - sometime next week. The insurance agent called in a special adjustor who said he wanted the investigation team since there'll be huge legal action against the fan manufacturer, installer, etc. and they're the ones who have to confirm the fire marshall's report.

Anyway - any suggestions on removing the smoke smell? He's washed a few things (he was allowed to take a few things from a downstairs closet) several times and the smell remains, even after being run through several washer-dryer loads. Tried letting things soak overnight with the same result. The initial insurance adjustor said they'll never get the smell out - and anything electronic (computers, camera, stereo, etc.) are a write-off as well because in a week to six months, they'll stop working due to smoke damage. But right now - the few vintage things (which will remain in the roofless ruins with whatever water damage, smoke damage & weather damage for the next week) which have sentimental (or now, scent-imental) value are his big worry. Any suggestions?
