Men who eat in a restaurant while wearing a hat, usually a baseball cap, and frequently worn backwards.

They are totally oblivious to how uncouth and rude this is.

In this part of the world I've seen men who were of an age that they should have known better wearing a hat or cap while seated at a table in a restaurant eating their meal, never mind the countless younger men and women doing the same thing. "Hat etiquette" has become an antiquated notion that few people care about in 2022; most people don't even know such a thing ever existed.

One of the rare occasions I’ve seen a hotel owner really asserting a certain dress code for his restaurant has been in Mauritius. The head waiter sent everyone back for redressing who didn’t show up to be seated in proper evening dress but in shorts, jeans, flipflops, basecaps… instead, women as well of course.

I saw this happen when people were refused entrance to the main ding room of a cruise ship. Formal wear was not required, but I suspect that some think a shirt is formal.

Folks like that usually ate in the buffet, rather than in the “stifling” atmosphere of the main dining room, which was rather more gracious.

If I'm eating outdoors, wearing a hat while I eat doesn't feel quite so odd. But indoors, the hat must come off. Not really an etiquette thing, I just don't feel comfortable wearing a hat indoors while I'm eating.

Back when mid-century vintage was the fashionable thing over here, maybe ten years ago, you could always tell the lifestylers from the fancy dressers at an event by whether they checked their hat with the overcoat, or wore it inside the venue all night.

Ah, yes - old distinction between those of us who do this "full time", lifestylers, and those for whom it's an occasional night out, a fancy dress costume. Slightly clumsy terminology - for the avoidance of doubt it's not a snark at either grouping - more that it just always intrigued me to see how people react differently to clothing and such.

I enjoy dressing well, but seldom have a chance now, except for funerals. I wound love to have a MTM black-tie outfit, but would have nowhere to wear it, alas.

My experience is that folks who regarded a fedora as simply clothing tended to treat it more as outwear, and check it once inside, while those for whom it was part of a costume look tended to keep them on.

I think it dovetails with our conversation about how things are generally dumbing-down. Maybe I’m over reacting. The baseball cap at the dinner table crowd will certainly go for one syllable rather than four. I would say Kraft knows its target audience. (Although, in fairness, a lot of haggard parents looking for something that their toddlers will eat will also grab the box. Fair enough.)

There are (as I'm sure you've seen) quite a few threads on the question of "hat etiquette" over on the hat channel of the Lounge, but suffice it to say here a common observation there is that a lot of the 'hat behaviour', for want of a better way of putting it, that was common when hat wearing was a norm has faded as hat-wearing did. I imagine that is inevitable to a great degree. Of course understandings of such 'rules' do evolve over time anyhow. It feels unnatural and 'wrong' for me to wear a hat indoors (save for something like a smoking cap on a cool, Winter evening. I also have a couple of nightcaps I wear in bed when it gets really into the depth of Winter as Mrs Marlowe runs much hotter than I do and can't take the heating at the same level I could. I think also being bald affects me there). I can't, of course, honestly determine whether that's an absorbed behaviour in terms of a notion of 'proper' etiquette, or how much it's a tic caused by my mother, who if she found us wearing a hat indoors would regale us with all sorts of claims that "wearing a hat indoors makes you bald". Ironically, although I was already wearing a hat as outerwear in the depths of Winter and boonie hats to keep the Sun off the back of my neck in Summer, it was only when I went bald and started shaving my head entirely that I really got into hats (to the point where, if I go outside without one on now, I feel naked).
