Interesting piece. The very different attitudes to women in active combat between the Western Allies and the Soviet regimes is fascinating. (It's something you also see replicated elsewhere in movements belonging to the ideological left; see, for instance, Constance Markievicz, a leading figure within the Irish Citizen Army, who was entrusted with overall command of the St Stephen's Green posting during the 1916 Easter Rising. Her enemies' attitudes to gender did save her from execution in the end.)
