Taubers began business in 1941 according to city records. I believe Taubers were listed as leather workers prior to a business in 1941

I have a reference to a 1980 Taubers advertisement. they oulasted all the bay area makers I can think of, except Levi Strauss.

The last label above I am most certain of because it goes with a particular late 40s zipper. This label goes into the 50s and the nob Hill is dropped (perhaps a move to another location?)

Taubers would have started just at the beginning of WWII. Safe to assume that business was slow throughout the war years. I see their production as ramping up right at the post war MC boom c.1947. The nob Hill label is from around that time, again the earliest I have seen to date.

This appears to be the 50s label, nob Hill removed

I will edit this post for a Goatskin Tauber's label I just remembered

This is a 60s label and used in conjunction with the Horsehide label. This label appears alone on non HH jackets. There is a goatskin label, but I have not seen a steerhide label. I believe it was assumed steer/cow if was not labeled horsehide. I don't think Taubers used anything but Horsehide in the 1950.

Taubers, like Cal leather, used horsehide into the 1960s and they labeled those jackets with the above label. Not sure when HH ended, though Taubers was advertising HH in the 60s.

The orange label comes next. When? I'm less sure about the beginning date, sure looks 70s and the jackets with this label look 70s.

I believe this is their last based on the jacket it was in. Looks like Taubers being retro. in the late 70s.

@tmitchell59 Every new jacket is a new revelation, Terry. Still so much to discover in this journey. Taubers is also the top of my collection. Personally, I rank them even higher than CSC.

Do you know anything about the owner(s) of Taubers? I remember seeing this eBay listing and it mentioned Raymond Tauber as the head designer of Taubers. I couldn't find that listing anymore.

And somebody somewhere told me that they had a financial difficulties in the mid-80s. That's why they closed up shop. Don't remember where I found it. So don't quote me on that.

There isn't much info about Taubers at all. I think Johnson Tam would know more about Taubers since Johnson Leather opened up shop in the early 80s. He probably worked with Taubers and all the shops around Nobb Hill before striking out on his own. It's unfortunate that Mr. Tam has passed away recently. I'd love to sit down and talk to him about the Bay Area leather scene back in the days.

With all due respect, R.I.P to a legend of the game

Most of what I know of Taubes history is in this thread.
The rest is in the jackets and the era and what we can put together. The Truckers were a piece of the puzzle which I have been searching for.

I don't know the lineage and ownership of Taubers, they certainly rode the tide of change fairly well. Our late 70s Truckers say they had not forsaken their heritage.

Taubers jackets are left to tell their story. The began at the beginning of WWII, 1941 and remained a name until the 1980s, 40 years.

Their jackets will be here in years to come. I'm wearing my oldest Taubers c.1945, and it has no issues. Near 80 now and will last another 20!!

Double post of my Taubers jackets.

Mint condition horsehide from the 50’s with original collar.

60’s version, still horsehide.

So cool to see they were still making horsehide jackets into the mid-late 60’s when pretty much everyone switched to steerhide. To me that is a sign of uncompromising quality.

Early 50’s (I think) Taubers. No hide distinction. Horse seems likely, right? Pretty much new. I wouldn’t even say this is broken in really. Strange though bc the zipper appears to be not original, although I think Taubers did use C&C (crown zips) so perhaps they did the repair job themselves. It’s a very clean job and an old Talon zipper pull was in the pocket. Doesn’t seem a zipper would fail on a jacket that hasn’t been worn much…

Beautiful. This was the one that was on Etsy forever. I would have bought if it was my size. It’s horsehide. I have a 50’s one like yours in horse with the nob hill label as well as a 60’s one in horse. These are some of the best fitting m/c jackets around.
