Wow, I want one! I wonder what the dimensions are on that crown and brim. I bet it cost a pretty penny even back in the 1930's.

It probably was a expensive hat due to the dimensions of it.
I think no one can make a felt so big. I can only speculate it would have a 10" crown with a 6" or 7" brim.

  5. I'm wondering if he wasn't a Wild West show performer late in the era, or some other kind of performer. That is obviously a brand above his shirt pocket & snaps on the pocket flaps but I can't tell it that is some sort of detail on the sleeve or damage to the picture. He's reading something from a paper. Perhaps he was a cowboy on a serial radio show.

I believe he was actually a Chicago gangster. Louis Alterie aka Diamond Jack Alterie.

    Probably.
But then if no one tries, no one will ever know.
I would be a person to try it if I had the tools to do it.

  9. It almost looks like a modern "watermark" electronically superimposed over the image, but it's probably water damage on the actual photograph.

It looks like Louis "Diamond Jack" Alterie, at least when compared to the photo that Buler posted. In any case if it is him he was a rancher and a gangster. Also known as Louis "Two Gun" Alterie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Alterie

He is (was) Alterie. It's the same hat Buler posted but another picture of it.

San Francisco circa 1917. "Chalmers town car." The ideal conveyance for European nobility, effete academics and the like.

Great hats, but do check the town car interior. Do not want any dirty boots or work clothes in that car.
