Has anyone seen a 140 before? The highest I’ve seen before is a 135.

Do you usually buy hats that aren’t your size? Are you selling it since you can’t wear it or what?

I buy hats in my size. I buy hats in sizes I think I can sell. I occasionally buy hats in sizes I can’t wear just to experience the hat. I’ll sell a couple hundred hats this year and maybe add 15 to my personal collection as well as some custom hats. I’ve also been known to trade hats with other Lounge members/friends.

Nice! I was wondering if you did selling too since you said it wasn’t your size because that’s the only thing that would make sense. Do you have a favorite brand/years/type/quality of all?

I can’t say I have a favorite. Borsalino, Mallory, Dobbs, Stetson, Cavanagh, and many others all made great hats. The Europeans made the best velours etc. The 1940s had, in my opinion, the best combination of component quality and style and proportions. Your preferences may differ.

I like Resistol quite a bit too. I have a 70’s resistol 100 and a 70’s beaver 125 and they’re great. As far as Stetson goes I know they made beaver 100s and I’m sure they’re great but the older 7x clear beaver are the ones I hear about the most. Are they the best Stetsons?

I bought this hat on a whim the other day because it’s so beautiful and I’m sure it’ll be too big for me because it’s a 7 1/8 and I wear 7/7LO. It hasn’t arrived yet but I plan to clean up the crease lines in the crown and nothing else. I’ll be posting it for sale on eBay when it arrives so if anyone on here is interested in it just let me know before I put it on eBay.

Grabbed this Silverbelly Plains model from shopgoodwill; it needs a new sweat since it's cracked in the back, and coming loose. Has a 2 cord band. No mention of beaver, does that mean there is none? I haven't applied much steam yet, but it seems to really want to stay with the cattleman crease.

also, i noticed earlier in this thread there is another hat from Levy's; and W101 was also displayed on that hat, but it was not the plains style.

Here’s one that eluded me for a long time: a wide brimmed Resistol fedora. I’ve found a couple 1960s stingy brims, but the larger fedoras I prefer are hard finds. This came off ebay and was listed as an unknown large size. After it arrived, I immediately put it on and thought “just a tiny bit tight.” Then I found some foam size reducers behind the sweatband: with them removed it fits perfectly!

Dark brown with a 2 ¾” bound edge brim and 5 ⅝” open crown. It’s a 3X Beaver with the Kitten Finish. Size: 7 ¾!

Rather dashing

I like the slightly crumpled look.

Good get, Brent. Resistol made a great dress fedora and those 3x Kittens are really nice. The big size and big brim is great!

Mickey, I somehow missed this post and only saw it today when I posted a new hat here.

I’ve never had one of the Stetson Beaver 100 hats, but I have had a few of the Stetson One-Hundred hats. I think the One-Hundred is great, but I don’t think it’s better than the 7X Clear Beaver (7XCB). My sample sizes are too small to draw any meaningful conclusions. Of course, the 7XCB predates the One-Hundred. As for being the best Stetson, I think that depends on what kind of hat you like. I personally think the mid-1950s and earlier 7XCB to be the pinnacle of Stetson’s western line, and the pricing of the day supports that, but then I’ve never handled a Clear Nutria hat or many of the other grades made in the past. I do know that many, and maybe most, of the current western/cowboy hat customers want their felt to be harder than the vintage stuff. I’d bet a lot of men in the market for the “best” cowboy hat would turn up their noses at felt that I’d drool over.

I too like Resistols, and it’s an added bonus that they can often be had at lower prices than their Stetson counterparts. The Resistol Beaver “140” I posted up thread needs to go out for refurbishment. It’s too nice of a hat to be stuck in a corner getting dusty.
