Here is a nice compilation of belly dancers from back in the day.

FAN-freaking-TASTIC! It's nice to know that the costumes and styles haven't changed. It's also great to know that stupid belly dancer tricks (also known as isolations) were also done.

What a nicely edited video. I ♥ the old belly dance stars, they had so much grace when they dance. Not to say you can't find that now, but its just that belly dance has evolved so much. Thanks God we still have classics people can refer back to if they want to know what I really looked like back in the day.

The Belly Dance intensive is held in Vegas in September. This year at the Flamingo. Classes, performances, vendors and more and I'll be there too :)

Are you taking classes?

Awesome. Who is your teacher? I was an avid belly dancer myself on and off for about 14 years. I just sort of quit after this last baby though, about 3 years ago. Its still always going to be a part of me, but I just don't have the time for it like I used to.:(

Me, too! I've been taking lessons off and on for nearly 20yrs. For a chunk of the early-mid 90s, I played doumbek for dancers in a Moroccan night club.

And if you need dance costumes...

My sister is Margo of margospatterns.com (Rennaissance era) and she is about to launch her dance wear line, starting with belly dance outfits!

Some lovely classic bedlah! It baffles me how they made them fit so well without modern stretch fabrics. Were they sewn into their costumes, do you think?

There are darts on the fabric that make the belt curved at the back/bottom. Of course covered in sequins you wouldn't know it till you took it apart. Then skirts *might* have been sewn to the belt. All those costumes would have been custom made for the dancer to her measurements and specifications. Definitely they went for fittings , but I don't think they would have had the costume sewn while the dancer was wearing it.

it's so nice to see this thread here, I love the vintage belly dance costumes and would love to make one. I've made a few things and bought a couple cabaret costumes, and it's not likely to see anyone here w/ the same costume but I'd still like to make something more vintage-y. I'm about to get pulled out of retirement since a hookah bar opened here recently by friends of a friend and may need more outfits if things go well... if anyone has any how-to info I'd appreciate it!

I haven't danced in a very long time. I got turned off by the recent phase of belly dance in the United States, beautiful things from it but a lot of commercialism and such. I have been tempted to get back into it, but I want to make vintage costumes, even going as far back as Vaudeville style, just to amuse myself. This might just inspire me to actual action on these ideas!
