Vintage Dobbs Homburg w/ Telescope Crown Org. Hat Box Stunning https://ebay.us/b6d6Sr

Amazing hat with a fun history.

This rolled brim, Dobbs of New York Telescope hat started as a classic Homburg made for the iconic Carson Pirie Scott & Company men's store. I took it to Perk Perkins, former rodeo cowboy and founder of Pendleton Hat Company for a refresh. He meticulously reshaped the crown to a Telescope creating a stunning River Gambler style hat.

A moth gave the hat four little kisses on the top of the brim that I didn't notice until photographing. Surface bites, very small. Only noticeable by a person taller than the hat wearer and with excellent eyesight.

    • Comes in original Dobbs box
    • Original labels in the crown
    • Original leather headband with gold foil Dobbs stamp
    • Feather in the hat band
    • Brim is 2 3/8" (from crown to roll of the brim)

  2. Just curious what makes you think this hat is made from “beaver felt?” Same with the Worth and Worth.

I've had several pure beaver fedoras, one made to order by Art Fawcett another from Steve Delk at Adventurebilt. The hand feel is distinctive and recognizable.

The time I spent with Art in his Medford Oregon shop was a great learning opportunity. Art showed me all the different fur felts...rabbit, beaver, mink and blends. It did not make me an instant expert but it gave me a good foundation.

  4. I have several vintage Dobbs hats, including homburgs, and I don’t think any of them are beaver. Beaver was not widely used in these hats. I don’t have your hat in hand, and I don’t know it’s provenance, but I’d bet it isn’t beaver. This homburg appears to be a standard grade (not a Fifteen, Twenty, etc.) from the 1950s and I can’t see it being beaver. Some of the best vintage hats made in the 20th century weren’t 100% beaver…most of the fedoras and homburgs from the 1900s were not beaver. It’s a great hat regardless of the type of felt.

Clearly you are more knowledgeable regarding Dobbs hats than I and are most likely right about the material used to make them. I was giving it my best guess. I have modified the ebay listings for the Dobbs and Worth & Worth, to show fur felt as the material as, clearly, I cannot know for an absolute certainty if they are a blended fur and if so what proportion is beaver and what might be rabbit or some other fur. Thank you for lending your expertise here.
