What 1940/50s dress shirt collars looked best unbuttoned?

I know that Spearpoint collars were the standard of 1940s/50s mens dress shirts, but I've always heard that they don't look good unbuttoned and worn casually. What type of dress shirts did work for a more casual unbuttoned look? Was the spread collar popular back then?

Attached is a photo of the look I'm interested in achieving.
