We live in a 1955 cape cod house. The window sills outside are concrete. I am of the opinion that a planter outside the kitchen window would be nice to grow herbs etc. what I am confused about is how to put it there. How do you mount it? Does anyone have advice, pictures etc?

If you mean a window box they usually hung from the window sill with iron straps. A concrete sill means you might have to drill a hole with a special bit, and insert a plastic lag to take a screw.

Redwood is a good wood for planters, it takes a long time to rot. Or red cedar.
