Here is the jacket I am getting: https://himelbros.com/collections/men/products/avro-d-pocket-rider-1939-goat

Here is me in the size 40:

I had someone take measurements of my body while I wore a tight fitting t-shirt. My measurements are as follows:

  • Around chest: 41.5 inches
  • Across shoulders, arcing: 18 inches
  • Around waist (largest part of stomach): 40 inches
  • Front length (base of neck to hips): 21.5 inches
  • Shoulder to wrist: 25 inches
  • Around biceps: 12.5 inches
  • Around forearm: 10.5 inches
  • I’m 6 feet and 180 pounds
I had the size 40 jacket but it was very tight in the shoulders and chest and hard to move in. The arms were moderately tight. The waist was tight but did not cause as much discomfort as the upper part did. I’m unsure of where to make allowances and thus what size to choose. I expect my shoulders and chest to get slightly bigger but in the future I can see my waist becoming smaller. I've been strength training and I could see my waist getting smaller due to losing body fat but my shoulders, chest, and arms getting a bigger. How do you size when you weight lift?

Based off this information how would you choose a size? Do you recommend I choose a stock size or should something be altered? I’m not entirely sure how to properly make allowances for a proper fitting jacket :(

Thanks!

I'd send DH your measurements along with the information you've provided here. He should be able to suggest the best size option for you.
In all reality, your dimensions likely won't change significantly enough, regardless of what you do, to effect that great a change in your garment size (unless you're 23 and roiding LOL).
I've been roughly the same weight for the past 15 years despite a very rigorous weight training regime since I was in high school. During that time my body has changed but my outerwear size really hasn't, not all that much anyway.
Give Dave your numbers with realistic allowances and he should be able to size your jacket appropriately. If you get into roids or synthol. Well that's your fault;)

I gave Mr.Himel these measurements but I'm not sure how to add allowances to them. These are my exact measurements taken over a tight fitting tshirt.

I would think he'd know how to appropriately add to these. You could also suggest you'd like room to layer. What size is the LW j-24 of yours? My gut says go one size up from that in a Himmel but that's based solely on pics I've seen of the styles and owning a j-23 that was a neat not slim fitting 44"

That LW is a size 44 with a 26inch chest measurement taken from the jacket lying flat and a 20inch arc measurement of the shoulder.

Man that's 2.5" over my LW and I'm 215lbs! I'd be swimming in 26" chest and my actual is 45"
That doesn't sound right to me. Granted the LW is quilted on the inside but 26" chest is a 52" jacket. I'd look closely at the numbers on your LW and send those to Dave.

My mistake

I meant ~23 inch chest across. So x2 it would be ~46 inch total?

Yeah that makes more sense. I'd measure up that LW and send pics of the fit to Dave. I'm sure he can dial in his pattern off that info. That's precisely what I did with Alan when I ordered my JL. It measures a bit larger than my 44" Aero but bears a 40" size tag.

When I ordered my Kensington, I just gave Dave my Pegasus D-pocket measurements and photos of me wearing it.
I didn't even gave him my actual measurements. We talk about the fit I wanted and he adjusted the numbers and asked me to confirm them.
I didn't see anything shocking about those numbers and gave my go ahead and voilà!

thanks. I'll measure my j24 since I really like the fit and send over my fit pics of me in it over to him.

Where are you located? Do you have any leather jackets that you like the fit of? This might seem crazy, but I wonder if you could literally ship over a jacket that fits you well, along with some pictures of you wearing it, and he could go hog wild.

You are right, he also offers this solution.

But in my case, it was too expensive...

He does let you send jackets in for fit. I had him make my jackets to exact measurements that I gave him. I honestly don't trust ANY jacket maker to make a jacket that fits me based off of my body measurements. Ever time I have done that, the fit was not right. When I sent Dave specs/measurements to build the JACKET to, I got the best fitting garment I own.

Also, if you're expecting to bulk up more, then wait.

Either way, that Avro is one of, if not the best looking asymmetrical jacket in the world. Nice choice. It's one of the 4 Himel jackets I still want :p

See, I wouldn't have any idea how to make proper allowances to do this. I'm not trained or skilled in any way when it comes to making proper fitting clothes.

I'm 5'9" 190 and typically wear a 44. I can wear some 42s depending on the style.

In Lost Worlds it is a 44. I've failed at 42 and 46 Lost Worlds.

I have a 42 Himel Heron which I can wear. It fits me like a 42. A 44 would probably be more correct.

If I was buying a new Avro I would order a 44. If I found a good deal on a pre-owned 42 I would consider it.

These will last you the rest of your life. As you are doing, take the time to get it right, you won't regret it.

It's good that you admitted that. That said, you should definitely wait until your body has leveled out. You want to get it right the first time.
