If you could choose, what city would you like to see crushed by a giant monster?

Baltimore. I would have said Gary, Indiana, but from the looks of it some creature has already stomped the, uh, stuffing out of it.

    Show Us Your Tractors

My 1950 Farmall Cub. I fabbed the carryall from a set of pallet forks and a fast-hitch point I picked up from at a salvage dealer. She gets regular use mowing my 2 acre field and maintaining the lane coming in from the road.

    Attire during lockdown

Salty O'Rourke saunters back into the lounge... I retired from the corporate/office rat race a few years ago, but re-entered my old industry in a project management role that requires fairly rugged attire when I venture into the field. But at all times, in the field or working from home, I...

    What Are You Reading

Working my way through Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer novels, currently on The Far Side of the Dollar - classic stuff, as good when you know how they end as they were on the first reading.

Are you ever tired of explaining why you live or dress the way you do?

Shorts in hot weather is one thing but that backwards baseball cap business sets my teeth on edge. It's the whoopie hat of our era, carried over into adulthood (excepting Goober Pyle, I don't think too many adults sported whoopie hats). Don't get me started on flip-flops.

I visited the Frank museum last year and don't recall that theory being espoused. Apparently Mr. Frank suspected a specific person of turning them in for the reward but could never prove it.

No one knows for sure who turned them in, but I'm pretty sure the Frank family wasn't betrayed by Jews, or Germans.

Be careful of putting too much stock in such remembrances. There are many similar quotes by ex-slaves that extolled life in bondage as opposed to the struggles after freedom came. I don't believe for one minute that they would have preferred slavery. The lesson is that 1) people tend to blot...

Are you ever tired of explaining why you live or dress the way you do?

That's a reference to anti-miscegenation laws that existed in many states of the USA, some of which weren't repealed until the 1960s. I doubt I would have been able to afford transatlantic travel in the 30s but in any event, I think I would have preferred to remain stateside after 1938 or so.

Are you ever tired of explaining why you live or dress the way you do?

Amen to that. I lost too many relatives to polio, tuberculosis, (now) preventable cancers, and accidents from riding around in death-traps to ever want to go back in time to the "good old days". Heck, if medical science hadn't caught up to my mom in the 50s I might not have been born at all...
