General Patton's Tanker Boots - Attention Military Boots Experts !

Polecat, I think the boots you are referring to are the Model1940 Cavalry boot. These were designed for the horse cavalry for ease of removing and putting on due to the fact that the Model1931 and prior issues had laces that went all the way up. My Grandfather used to have a pair still when I...

Old Movie Posters - anyone collect, and what?

I don't actually collect them however, when I was a kid a friend of the family ran a local theater and also a drive-in. I used to get posters all of the time and hang them in my bedroom. Here are a few along with one of the poster holders that used to hang outside of the cinema before they tore...

Frank Sinatra in 'Von Ryan's Express'

I have always love this film. Watched it a few times with my pop growing up. I always loved the scene where the Chaplain was dressed up as an officer and is chewing out the real German in the train station. Here is a copy of the book dated 1964 that I picked up at a yard sale waaaay back in...

20 Obsolete English Words that Should Make a Comeback

Even though my pop is off the boat from Germany, he is always fond of using the word "Donnybrook" when referring to a fight! Even in his old police reports..lol. I remember my Great-Grandma calling some trashy girl a "painted hussy" when I was a kid as well.

Remains of Spitfire and Pilot heading back to Australia.

Very nice for the family to have that kind of closure and also for the pilot to have much better grave than the bottom of a river.

SPAM and the Second World War?

Not to derail a thread but in relation to SPAM and the wartime opinon. When I was a kid i saw a cartoon in an old Stars and Stripes of a ragged Japanese soldier surrendering to a Marine under the condition that he would not have to eat the American delicacy known as SPAM lolol.

Facial Hair or Goatee in wwII?

Not the best quality picture but here is one from my collection that I got right from the subject. This is a P-51 pilot from the 384th Fighter Sq. taken in the ETO 1945 with mascot. He is sporting a goatee, it's more prominent in the photo when you see it in person.

    Show us your Guns!

Matrioshka, the Colt is an "OFFICERS MODEL" it doesn't appear as such in the photos but it's a very large frame almost the same as a Colt 1917. The barrel is a 6" model. For a size comparison, the photo its laying on is an 8"x10"

    Show us your Guns!

This is the first time I've attempted to post a few pictures of several of my firearms. please forgive my photographic skills or lack thereof. This first one is a Colt .38 carried by the pictured DSP Motorcyle Trooper from 1929-1949. A 1917 Colt 1911 U.S. Property carried in WWI "The...

Where did your user name come from??

Kopf-Jaeger because my Great-Grandfather was a 'Trench-Raider' in WW1. Kind of a slang name they gave themselves (Head-Hunter)

They Say Em' From the Golden Era - Slang & Memorable Phrases

I remember when I was a kid two phrases my Great-Grandfather said refering to some ner' do wells. I hope these don't offend anyone: "That boys crazier than a sh*thouse rat!" "Useful as tits on a bull!" I also remember he always called the couch a 'Davenport" and the stool a 'Hassock"...

    Stop for Nazi posts?

I love this site and I lurk here more than I post. I figured I would chime in on this post as it hits kind of close to home. Having had relatives fight on opposite sides in two world wars I can assure you that not every German was a criminal or homicidal maniac. My father's family first and...

WWII Aviation Scarves (RAF, USAAF, etc.)

MikePara, selling a relatives military stuff? That doesn't surprise me at all. You'd be surprised how much military stuff I've found sitting with the trash on the curbs. Quite a few people nowadays just don't seem to care anymore. It's a damn shame....

    Buried Treasure

The property that my house sits upon was a farm from about the 1850s-1959. The rear of my property has a hedgerow that marked the perimeter of the farm. Whenever I am cleaning up out there or moving stumps I tend to find some neat things. So far I have found several very old bottles amazingly...

Helldiver discovered in San Diego's Lower Otay Resevoir

Correct me if I'm wrong but unlike the Air Force and Army I think the Navy retains ownership of their aircraft in perpetuity? I remember years ago a salvage company raised a WW2 Navy dive bomber from one of the Great Lakes. When they got it to shore the Navy stepped in and took it back. Anyone...

family members on the "wrong" side

Prien Prien an interesting sidenote, My one Uncle who was in the Luftwaffe started out in the Kriegsmarine prior to the war! He served on the Cruiser Koln as well as the Linienschiff Schlesien. He entered the Naval air service and when that was taken over by the Luftwaffe he transfered to them...

family members on the "wrong" side

My Grandfather and one of his brothers served in the Luftwaffe in WW2 while two of the other brothers served in the Kreigsmarine. Another Uncle (Werner) by marriage served in the Kreigsmarine as well. When he would come and visit, my neighbor who had been a paratrooper in WW2 and him would sit...
