Summer style...how do you keep it when the heat kicks up?

"I see a middle-aged man in shorts and I see a man who has not accepted the full role of adulthood." - That is abuse. Of me. I wear shorts, I'm middle-aged, I take it personally. You do not know anything about my life, and yet you feel entitled to judge me based on my wearing of shorts. I'll...

Summer style...how do you keep it when the heat kicks up?

I love how everyone says "I respect your opinion" before heaping abuse on shorts-wearers, as if that makes it OK. It's not OK - I am a grown-up, I wear shorts, and if anyone doesn't like it, well, tough. I'm going to keep on wearing shorts, and if my shins offend you; GOOD!

Summer style...how do you keep it when the heat kicks up?

I wear shorts a lot in summer. Those who say that grownups don't wear shorts are very much in the wrong. When it gets hot enough, only a fool doesn't wear shorts. It's not too difficult to find vintage style shorts. Do a search for Gurkha Shorts, for instance.

    Jeans

I'm in Australia. The Wranglers I bought were from a local eBay reseller, and cost me less than AUD$50 including postage. Which is a little over £26 at today's rates, but was probably closer to £28 at the time. (We don't pay VAT or import duties on low cost imports here, which helps.) There are...

    Jeans

I have a pair of those, for affordable jeans they are absolutely the best deal around. Very nice cut, legs not too loose or too tight, waistband reaches my navel.

    Darcy Clothing (UK) Trousers

I have two pairs of Darcy corduroy trousers and a pair of the black denim trousers. The quality is excellent on all three. The legs don't seem narrow at all to me, but my legs are skinny so I may not be the best judge. The fit is generous, the 32s I have fit more like 33s or more; they're roomy...

    Best casual pants with suspenders

I have a pair of Darcy black denim trousers, and a couple of pair of their corduroy trousers. They're great, and relatively affordable. You can find military surplus trousers of a decent cut (ie high-waist) for small amounts of money. Dress/parade uniforms are a good bet if you can find them...

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

Interesting (to me) that a couple of them are wearing knee-length puttees; by the 40s most armies had switched to gaiters and those still wearing puttees had mostly switched to ankle-length short puttees. Perhaps they are wearing leftover WW1 gear - it was only 20-25 years old at that stage and...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

The replacement is the same design as the originals, it's just a bad design.

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

With new braces, the more expensive/upmarket ones often come in sizes, the cheaper ones usually don't. However, as noted upthread, a lot depends on your trousers. High-back/high-waist trousers work better with shorter braces. You can measure yourself with a tape-measure; hold one end on the...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Bundeswehr (German Army) braces The first set are an unsatisfactory design; the one-piece leather button-straps on the front simply don't sit well and look/feel awkward and uncomfortable. The second set are a much better design; the one-peice back leather part is shaped better and the...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

I haven't tried any, yet. I'd expect that Vees would work best on high-waist trousers - and if you've reduced the rear strap of the Y to a stub, you might as well have a V ;) EDIT: A few of the cheap braces I have are almost Vees, with short faux-leather rear straps. They do work better with...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

By the way, before the 1960s, it was not uncommon for braces to be V shaped, not Y shaped. Example 1, UK army: Example 2, West German Army: Both those examples are vintage, but both are available for sale. I'm actually waiting for delivery of a set of the German ones - though given the...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

You're very welcome, bombin. Glad I could assist. You can shorten the front straps too if you feel the need for it. You have to be extra conservative with the amount you trim, though - because the straps are doubled over you end up with double the reduction in length.

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

I took a couple of quick photos... The two on the left show my shortened elastic sections, and my messy but serviceable sewing. You can also see that I've singed the elastic with a lighter, which melts the plastic content and keeps the ends from fraying. Yes, I could have doubled the ends...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Yes, it's done by machine on most of the ones I've seen. I don't have a sewing machine (and I'd have to learn how to use it if I did) but I see no reason why it couldn't be done on a home machine. Doing leather attachments by machine would be considerably more difficult, I'd expect.

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

If you can do basic hand-sewing, it's very easy. If the rear strap of the Y is attached to a metal loop, just cut the elastic off the loop, shorten it, and re-attach. In some cases the rear strap is sewn to a leather loop, but you can unpick the stitching, shorten the strap, and re-attach the...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Check page 28 of this thread and you'll see pictures of braces that I customised to work better with high-back trousers. Post 276 is the one to look for.
