    Basics of cleaning....

Remove the liner? Due to bad advice, I left the liner on the first hat I soaked in naptha. It etched the plastic in the liner. From then on, I removed the liner. The sweat is no big deal. It will wilt and whiten a little but rubbing it out with a leather conditioner will put it back in good...

Impulse buy -- did I waste half a "C" note?

Duane is a regular here. He owns the Fedora Store. Hiding a moth bite is not really complicated. Just start picking at the hole with a straight pin. You'll pull up small strands of felt. Then blend the strands to cover the hole. Try it on a small hole to start with. Or if you have a beater...

Impulse buy -- did I waste half a "C" note?

Good looking hat. Some careful plucking in and around those moth bites with a straight pin will blend them into the felt. Even a seasoned eye will have a hard time spotting them. Contact Duane for better instructions.

    Open Road Panama Hat

RBH, You might try denatured alcohol. I used it on a Resistol with some success. Unfortunately, I got alcohol on the label glued to the inside of the crown, and it bled through to the outside of the crown. I sure don't know how to get rid of that. If you try it, be careful.

HELP: Limp brim on Milan straw

Yes, the felt hat stiffener will work on straw but, you might try Sharpetoys method. It looks like a winner to me. Spray it on one light coat at a time till you get the hang of it. Better yet, try it on a beater first.

    "Replacing sweatband?" :: The Followup

''But, Bud is now sold out of bands. Anyone have ideas for other sources for decent sweatbands?'' I got mine from Bud before he ran out. A while back, someone mentioned J W Hats. (See Making a Hat sticky) I inquired via email but never got a reply. Maybe if you phoned. The number is...

    Silly eBay bids

If I determine what a hat is worth to me and bid that amount at the last minute, what is unfair about that? If I put my bid in five or six days before the auction ends, all I am doing is encouraging a shill or a scab to pick at my bid. Why would I want to do that? Why don't I just shoot...

    Another Naptha Source

Years ago when I first bought naphtha from this distributor, I would ask for naphtha. They would write naphtha on the invoice. I would pay for it, and then go to a large tank labeled Naphtha and pump it into my container. Such was the simple life. When I bought the mineral spirits, the...

    Another Naptha Source

I second what TM suggests. Especially # 4. High shipping charges tell you all you need to know about the seller.

    Another Naptha Source

I started buying naptha from one of the local oil distributors some years ago. I used it for mainly for cleaning electric motors & metal parts. Back then, you would pay for it, and then go pump it into your own container. I don't remember what I paid for it then, but, I think it was about the...

    Knox Twenty Five Heads Up

Nick, When someone advertises an old item as ''in new condition,'' I always take that to mean the item is in excellent condition. Not really like new, but nice. The only thing that can ever be ''new'' is new. Before I asked for a refund, I asked myself this question. How much would I have...
