It's been going over here in the UK for at least 15 years and no sign of any let up, frequent Steampunk and Goth weekends at Whitby where Bram Stokers Dracula sought refuge after being shipwrecked assist in its longevity.......me I'm not a great fan but I do get to sell them quite a bit of stuff!
Here's one that has me stumped, a British quality made Woodrow & sons from the mid 50s (according to the newspaper packing under the sweat)
There's something not right about the 'porkpie' finish which definitely not factory done....however there are no giveaways as to how it was originally.
I've quite a few such suitcases, some were made from pressed cardboard type fibre and some were woven type material impregnated with some sort of resin, both had reinforced corners in either parent material or leather.
Whilst I admire you're wish to 're create these surely you could find a set...

Though I'll admit finding pre 1950 suits and shirts isn't easy.
I've actually just rescued a 1962 slim. Adjustable from a local charity/thrift shop....it was pretty grotty and wouldn't adjust but a couple of hours cleaning and polishing have brought it up to a decent shaving razor, certainly great for the three quid I paid......I still love my 1912 though.
