Old thread I know and you're probably sorted now. Books that teach pattern making Natalie Bray metric pattern cutting is probably the Bible. You're much better making your own blocks and it's not too hard although it looks fiendishly difficult. Regards, Ann- Ann Sadler

Here's an English hat ruler. I know all about calculations circumference from length and width but does anyone know how this might work? Is there a calculation achieved by lining up the numbers on the ruler side? Regards Ann- Ann Sadler

Not wonderful pictures due to glass and reflection but this is the tool a local shop that specialises in old tools has. The owner says he has another one but neither have the slug with them. Yes safety issues also restrict us sometimes. I wouldn't risk a silk hat or my head out hunting and most people change into safety helmets after the meet and before setting off. I hope the time doesn't come when we aren't able to wear them at all. Regards, Ann- Ann Sadler

What is the crown height on those, they look quite low? Silk looks nicer a lot of us have vintage habits from the 30s or a bit earlier or later and the sheen on the silk and getting the right shape and height just makes all the difference to the overall picture. Regards, Ann- Ann Sadler

I don't like the felt ones and normally the crown height is too low, OK for dressage but incorrect for side saddle. People prefer the silk hats although they are more expensive they look much better, I only buy if the silk is perfect or just a tiny rub. I have Czech and Slovenian friends but...- Ann Sadler

Ive bought a few from Germany in the past as for one thing they tended to have larger sizes and also quite often the crown height was lower than in the uk and therefore were just right for ladies side saddle. I haven't found out very much but it seems that Mrs White was connected with A J White as they have the same address of 8 Burlington Gardens so perhaps Mrs White was the part of the business that dealt with ladies hats and caps. I think Mrs White as a hatter was around in the 30s and 40s possibly up til the 1950s. An old friend of mine was taken to the shop to have her first top hat made or fitted. I'm not sure if they were a branch or related to the hatter A J White. Sorry I would have to try and look up more details...- Ann Sadler

No I don't think so. I think crown heights varied as well as some riders in Victorian photos look to have taller crowns.
