I use the Astra Super Platinum blades regularly. They are currently my "go-to" blades! I usually get 2 to 3 shaves out of them before changing out. I've always had great results with them.
I sometimes get "I like your hat/tie/sunglasses!" from strangers, but mostly it's co-workers who (good nature-edly) say things like "You look like a dapper chappy today" or some other ridiculous comment. There are some days where I feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb, but I soldier on...
I would start with a very basic safety razor like the Merkur 33C. I've had fantastic luck with this model. Very basic and does a great job...and not too expensive. Another option is like Gin&Tonics suggested...find a vintage Gillette Tech or similar razor at an antique shop or flea market. I...
I always wash my thrift store clothes before wearing, but my recent thrifting has had me finding some great men's shoes. I have my own "sanitation routine" that I go through with used shoes. I thoroughly wipe out the interiors, spray with both disinfectant and anti-fungal spray, then give them...
I'm to the point I'm literally buying 70% or more of my wardrobe from the thrift store. There's nothing like finding a $70 shirt that's been barely worn for $3.50. I've found $100 ties for a dollar each. Just wash the stuff and it's good to go (steam or dry clean the ties!). If you're...
Yesterday at an Independence Day party, we were chatting with my GF's niece, who is a local award-winning designer. My GF suggested she could make some bow ties for me. Of course, I thought this was a good idea! She very nicely agreed! Now...I'm wondering what kind of fabric I should search...
Dinerman,
Woah, great finds!! In my approximately 7 years of hunting for bow ties in thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales I believe I have come across exactly 7 bow ties. Guess I'll just keep looking. Surely someone in my area has a box of old ones they'll want to get rid of someday!
That's a good point! Sometimes it can feel like a tropical jungle here in Arkansas when we get into the "dog days" of summer. Maybe I should carry a copy of this picture in my wallet. I can whip it out and show them if anybody comments on my short sleeves/bow tie combo!
Okay I need some advice. I know it's generally considered a fashion no-no to wear a tie with a short sleeved shirt, unless you're looking for the NASA 60's master control look. Admittedly I've indulged in this look before a few times. But now that it's getting hot and humid where I'll probably...
Shangas,
I'd definitely like to see some photos too! I've thought about attempting to make a few of my own. The only problem is, I have zero sewing skills (apart from the occasional button repair). Do you use an inner lining to give the tie some stiffness?
I also go with the try-to-make-modern-clothes-seem-vintage ethos. Some days I get a little self-conscious because I realize there can be a fine line between looking put-together and vintage-ey and looking like I'm wearing a costume. I've been "dressing up" a lot more lately. After losing some...
"Three new bow ties from Beau Ties Ltd."
Very nice trio of bow ties! I like the polka dots! I only have one polka dotted bow tie at the moment (black with white dots), but I hope to be adding more soon to my collection.
I've recently acquired a few Countess Mara bow ties. They were packaged in an obvious "untied" state, so I knew they were self-tie! They seem to be good quality, and they have some unique designs.
Ha ha!! That's a great idea! I actually have considered just untying the thing every time someone comments on it. If I was more adept at tying it without a mirror, I would!
