    Best beauty decision you've made?

This is not the best photo since it was taken indoors during Halloween, but this was my costume this year. I used upholstery fabric and it turned out better than I thought it would.

My recent project was this 1950s inspired Sarong Dress. I drafted this pattern myself based on my reference photos of Alfred Shaheen's work. More information about it can be found here.

    Weight loss options

I think of this more as a lifestyle choice, rather than a way to fit into a perceived number of what the perfect size may be. This is what works for me: It helps to cook your own food, and to focus on dishes that baked, sauteed, or boiled and are vegetable-based. For protein sources, I...

    Confidence in dressing vintage

Maybe you can watch some films with her to see what styles/eras she might like. Try a broad range from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 80s, etc, and see if she likes any styles from a particular era. I live in NYC and it's fairly easy to blend in here. Everyone looks atypical in some way, and it doesn't...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Raising armscye/armhole in bodice? I'm currently working on my second version of this pattern and I need to raise the armscye (armhole depth) by about an inch. Usually when I do this I take up the shoulder seams, but this has a saddle shoulder, which is cut in one piece with the part of the...

    Before and After Vintage

The vintage thing for me started since I developed an allergy to hair dye that was such an integral part of my look a few years before. I sometimes miss it, since it was easier to dress all black all the time, but I don't miss the hair upkeep (getting colored and straightened), or the monotonous...

    Be Honest...

I don't wear much makeup every day either. I usually wear sunscreen (clear, not-tinted), neutral eyeshadow in a tone that is a little darker than my skin tone, black eyeliner, burt's bees lip gloss and a MAC red or coral shade that isn't very heavily applied (applied and then blotted off). I...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Using slopers to fit pattern? I recently made a bodice and skirt sloper and was wondering how to use them to fit existing patterns. Sorry if this question sounds rudimentary, but do you just lay the sloper over the pattern pieces to see if they fit? I still find myself measuring pattern pieces...

I've had an etsy store for a few years now. The past few years I've sold some zombie rabbit prints, which I make. Etsy store is here: http://meladori.etsy.com

    Whats in YOUR winter wardrobe??

It's still hot, humid, smelly, and generally unpleasant in NYC. I wish winter were here! I've stopped buying ready-to-wear since I started sewing seriously, and a lot of what I wear for winter includes what I wear now (summer transitional clothing like blouses) with tights, a flannel slip...

    Show Us Your Tattoos

Miss Hannah, you can ask them to change it if you don't like their design. You should bring some reference pictures of what you want your tattoo to be, and also check out their portfolio to see if their style fits yours. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

    Show Us Your Tattoos

This is my first and only tattoo, a 3/4 sleeve done in traditional Japanese style. In my culture, tattoos are reminiscent of gangs and a criminal element, and my family is very much anti-tattoos (especially as a girl). It was a fairly big deal for me to get one since it meant standing up for my...

    Everyday Bags

I refuse to buy cheap bags so as a result I only own 2 bags. One of them is black leather with a silver chain handle that I got on sale at Macy's, which worked out well for my punk/rock and roll styled days, and the other one is my mom's old Coach bag that she gave me from the 90s. Sadly my...

    Home Economics

For fresh vegetables, I usually cook them the day that I buy them. On Sunday I cook a large meal -- for me about 5 servings, since I live alone. I eat that steadily throughout the week until Wednesday, when I cook another large meal and eat that until the weekend. I rarely buy meats and freeze...

    The Great Sweater Search

For those who can sew, there's a link below about how to refashion your existing cardigans. I tried this with one of my cardigans from Old Navy that had unique buttons but was hip-length and a little too large and it does help. I shorted the cardigan to waist length and fitted it more closely...

    The Pain of Nostalgia

With the advances in women's lib, civil rights, technology, and health care now I definitely don't wish I was living in the 40s or 50s. I think when we look back at the past, we tend to see it with rose-colored glasses and idealize it. I do admire the fashion and sense of style they had back then.
