1936 Auburn

[WH1]

This afternoon driving to the Bush airport in Houston I pass a shell station a mile or so from the rental car return and I look to my right and what do I see but one of the most beautiful pieces of machinery ever built sitting in the parking lot of a shell station. I just had to whip a u-turn and take some pics to share with all of you. Enjoy!!

I passed one of those on the freeway a few years ago, it was sort of a fire engine red. I wonder if it was an original color?

I've only seen one of these in The Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the Ralph Lauren collection. What a beautiful car! -Amazing lines.

my Uncle had a 1935 Auburn 653 sedan, and was it a treat to work on with him! in fact, i still have a gash on my shin from the rolling fender when we dropped it (we were doing a "frame up" restoration). i so wanted to take the hood ornament and mount it on a block of marble and place it on my desk while we were finishing the project... pity he sold it along with his house years ago.

I fell in love with Auburn boattail speedsters as a kid! Back then, I remember asking my dad why my grandfather bought a boring '35 Chevy Coach when he could have had one of these. My dad pointed out the "slight" price difference and told me that the Auburn would have been impractical for delivering milk (my grandfather had a small dairy farm). Oh well...

Oh I don't know about impractical, he would had the fastest delivery service in the business.

When I showed my wife the pictures the first thing she said was "What a great car for going on a picnic!" Got to agree with her this car makes you think of long breezy june/july drives in the country on a nice curving roadway.
I used to have a triumph spitfire and it was a nice car, but it didn't even come close to this. Of course neither did the price. Someday.

The only chance I figure I'll have to see one is to pay... they have a bunch of streamlined pieces at the Phoenix Museum of Art for a spell.

But I'll pay, I'll pay! If someone has taste like that around this town, I've yet to see it out on the road... although I did spot a bright yellow, ostentatious Lambo today parked out in front of my lunch place. Tacky!

In the early 1980s, a bunch of these were reproduced for the "mass" market. Repros of Auburn 876 Speedsters. Chances are that the one WH1 saw was from that batch.

As I recall, the repros were going for over $50,000 ... which was a lot of money in the early '80s. Still, a few of them were seen around Los Angeles in those years.

Part of why they were so good: in a crash, the other guy had to get past all that good solid Auburn, Indiana (I have relatives nearby, and hit the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg museum every time I visit) dinosaur iron before anything got to you.

Big hunks o' metal are sometimes a GOOD thing...
