I've been holding off on posting this one because I don't even completely want to sell it - but I know it's the right thing to do as this one is just too large for me. Up for grabs is this beautiful 1940s Golden Bear coin pocket motorcycle jacket.
An absolutely iconic American company based in San Francisco, the company has a rich history dating back to 1922. Originally founded as Golden Bear Sportswear by Jacob S. Goldenberg and Samuel Feldman, the company initially focused on manufacturing raincoats and outerwear. Over the years, Golden Bear has become particularly famous for its leather jackets, which are crafted with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship.
This jacket is particularly noteworthy in that it dates back to the 1940s, based on the Talon main zipper, the wool based lining, label, United Carr branded hardware, and overall construction method. I have yet to see another Golden Bear this old. Personally, the jackets from the 1950s are cool and all, but the jackets dating back to the 1940s are on a whole different level and this one is no exception.
Absolutely incredible 1940s leather on this surprisingly hefty piece. Unlabeled, but I can’t see how this wouldn’t be high quality horsehide. No significant faults to be found. All stitching feels good and strong; absolutely no significant leather damage. The collar has a bit of wear which is just unavoidable given the age of the jacket. Fabric lined pockets, super hefty belt buckle (seriously, the heaviest I have come across on a jacket). There is some fabric wear as you can see behind the belt.
The beautiful wool lining is in overall very nice condition for its age and is comfortable as heck (no itchiness). Further, the sleeves are lined in this incredibly smooth rayon/silk like material, and is in very nice condition and makes it super comfortably to slip in and out of. Heavy duty leather sleeve flap enclosure. Inner pocket. Leather lined inner hem.
The pockets are heavy duty cotton drill type and are all intact and quite clean. There are pulls on all the pockets, but it might be the case that there are some replacements. Either way, they match the originals and one couldn't even tell that they were replaced unless you're looking for it.
As you can see, the main zip will need to be addressed. Super common fault on a jacket of this age. There's also an issue with one of the sleeve zippers as pictured, but I do have the original zip. This was actually attached when it arrived, but managed to slip off one day. I believe it might be able to be salvaged with the original piece. But all is good and the jacket is clean and will withstand good wear.
Now of course, it's a bit more difficult to obtain precise measurements on a jacket with the main zipper missing. I've measured the jacket to the best of my ability and included photos of the measurements. Please allow a small degree of discrepancy due to error:
Armpit to armpit: 22.5"
Shoulder to shoulder: From the front I am getting right around 19", at the back I am getting around 19.4"
Sleeve length taken straight from shoulder seam: 23.25"
Length from collar to the back: 23.75"
Length from collar to front: 24.5"
Bottom hem: Approximately 18" but could potentially be a bit bigger than this
