The 50s decor was so comfortable despite being in the Moderne style. Unfortunately modern design has lost that "Gemuetlichkeit" coziness of the 50s interior and is more brutal IMHO. Having grown up seeing Bachelor Father I well remember the hip design of Uncle Bentley's house as a very fond childhood memory of how cool the USA was for all us folks Down Under.

If you ever have an oppourtunity to visit the Art Institute of Chicago, go check out the Thorne Gallery. It is exact replicas of period rooms from around the world dating from I believe the early 16th Century up until the 30s. It's fascinating and is like the ultimate dollhouse!

Great stuff, vitanola! I'm going to dig through my collection of vintage images and see what I can add to this thread. Meanwhile, here's a nice illustration of an Arts & Crafts living room:

The Bonnet House in Ft. Lauderdale is one of my favorite places. Fredric Bartlett painted everything you see in the pictures.

From the Bonnet House Website (http://www.bonnethouse.org/):

Hugh Taylor Birch gave the Bonnet House property as a wedding gift to his daughter Helen and her husband, Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1919. The newlyweds began construction of Bonnet House in 1920, eager for a winter retreat where Frederic could pursue his artwork and Helen could compose music and poetry. Tragedy struck in 1925 when Helen died from breast cancer. Frederic’s visits to Bonnet House then became sporadic until 1931 when he married Evelyn Fortune Lilly. With this marriage, a renaissance occurred on the site as Frederic and Evelyn entered a prolific period of embellishing Bonnet House with the decorative elements.
