Ask the Dust

Ask the Dust is one of the great but unsung novels of the 1930s, an influence on Charles Bukowski among others. It is being brought to the screen by Robert Towne, the writer of Chinatown, for which Ask the Dust was actually the inspiration. He's been trying for decades to make this film and it is finally finished. Filmed in South Africa, it is set largely in Bunker Hill circa 1936-7. I'm really looking forward to this film as I love (prefer) "real" depictions of the period to the heghtened and cartoony (though in a good way) depictions in films like the Shadow, the Phantom and The Rocketeer. The only problem I see in the Ask the Dust film is the cast; Colin Farrell is playing the lead and I cannot say I'm a fan.

And even an excerpt: Chapters four and five from the Anthology of 30s prose.

Enjoy.

"Ask the Dust" is a great novel, and Fante is one of my favorite writers. But I almost hate to hear that someone is filming it. I don't know that it's all that "filmable." Oh well, at least it's not a 1960s TV series.
