Notice the comments from hams, who are a little embarrassed by the lack of modern technology...and from non-hams, who rag on the hobby as a dorkfest.

What they're all missing is the fact that radio - and in the 30s that meant ham, broadcast, and even the infant TV - had romance. Mystery. Magic. Excitement. Now we take it for granted.
