Civil War Museum, Jefferson Davis Hat

Jefferson Davis never wore a Confederate uniform that I'm aware of. As the President of the Confederate States of America, like his counter part Lincoln, he was a Commander-in-Chief, but not a member of the armed forces. There were two versions of the black military hat posted, the pattern 1855 and the pattern 1858. The official title was the "Army Dress Hat" but they were more widely known as the "Hardee" hat (after Lt. Col.(US)/Lt. Gen. (CS) William J. Hardee - who literally wrote the book on US Infantry tactics). On occasion they were referred to has Jefferson hats, though. This example has officers dressing with the device for staff and general officers. There was also a patten of shoe issued to the US Army commonly called the Jefferson Bootee because it was adopted during Jefferson's tenure as Secretary of War.

---Sorry for the geek out. Former Civil War reenactor/volunteer docent at Fort Point---

Thoroughly off-topic of the thread, Fort Point is such a neat place to visit, even if you're just watching the surfers manage the healthy tides rolling in and out of the bay. Your docent work must be pretty interesting, Guttersnipe!

Fort Point is REALLY cool! But what I did there was actually pretty boring - depending on your point of view. The Civil War Reenacting organization I was a member of periodically provided uniformed "soldiers" to garrison the fort on weekends. We'd mount a guard, walking posts along the wall, stand as sentries at the gate, drill on the parade ground, conduct firing drills on the parrot *** displayed on the parade ground and answer (usually) stupid questions from visitors - "Is that a real ***" being the #1 favorite.

I have to say, I've lived in the bay area for 50 plus years and have never heard oif Ft Point before. And I'm a major history buff, too. I see a day trip coming up...

Actually we-uns of East Tennessee were overwhelmingly anti-secessionist/pro Union, to wit: During the recent unpleasantness our future Governor, Parson Brownlow, was the editor & publisher of "Brownlow's Knoxville Whig, and Rebel Ventilator" newspaper. :D
