How often do you wash your hair? (guys & gals)

I only wash my hair once a week, on sunday evening. Between washes my hair doesn´t get into contact with water at all. It took me some time to get my hair and scalp into that rhythm but it feels much healthier now, even though I dye and bleach the hell out of it once in a while. I don´t even use conditioner anymore because the dryness seems to be gone. From thursday on I wear a ponytail because my hair starts losing volume, though :)

I'm so jealous of the girls who can get away with infrequent washing. I'm an every other day or an every 3rd day with enough baby powder that my hair should be white kind of girl. Actually my last day when it's kinda oily and I put baby powder in it is always my best hair day.

I have very, very greasy hair. When I used traditional shampoo, I washed three times a week, with Sunday being the 3rd day and my hair looking horrific.

I started doing no-poo and am now stretching to a week. A week! Saturday and Sunday I do need to use cornstarch (I wash Sunday evenings). If I exercise heavily, I need to rinse my hair with warm water. If I have a special event on a Saturday, I rinse my hair or extend my washings.

If you had told me a year ago that I'd be washing my hair once a week, I would have laughed. But no poo is that amazing!

I used to wash, blowdry and flat iron every single day. My hair is very thick and coarse and already has a tendency to be dry. All of that coupled with coloring and my hair was a wreck. Now I shampoo 2 to 3 times per week and my hair is in much better shape. My scalp does not get oily, although if I go a whole week on one wash (which I sometimes do) my hair tends to be pretty flat.

I used to be convinced I had oily hair, and that a nightly wash was in order. However, last winter I started spacing washings out to preserve my sets... lo and behold, I can go up to a week without a wash, and my hair looks (and feels) lovely and clean. I just rinse it every other night.

I wash my hair twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. I set it on the day I wash it and it lasts pretty well for 3 days with some minor touchups depending on the weather. On the day before I wash it again, it's usually a ponytail day.

Ah, I use baby powder too. Helps soak up oil, and I find I get better volume.

Sounds like we have the same kind of hair all around, actually. I have to wash it every three days at least or its horrifying.

Slightly off-topic, but for all you darker-haired gals who use the baby powder trick, is it hard to get out? I've always wanted to try this, especially in the summer when my hair does get dirtier faster, but I'm scared it'll look like I have a strange scalp condition in my black hair! :eeek:

With mine if by the end of the first day there isn't some baby powder in it it can often be horrifying.
My hair is very oily, but if I wash it more frequently it just gets more oily.

My hair is very dark and I never had a problem with it. As long as you don't use too much you should be fine. Just sprinkle a small amount and then do the motion of shampooing it in. Then just keep adding it in until your hair doesn't look greasy anymore. Just don't use too too much or you'll end up with very dull looking hair.

My hair is chesnut colored (kind of a dark brown) and I haven't had this problem. I do use corn starch not baby powder, however. I apply it with one brush (sprinkle on the brush, brush through hair, repeat) and then brush and style my hair with a second clean brush. It's important to "lift" your hair up with your brush, so that you are brushing your hair up or out, rather than against the scalp (that way the cornstarch falls out of your hair). If I put too much on I move to a comb or a third brush to get it out- most of it will brush out.

The other tip is to wash your brush if you are doing it day after day. That way you don't get used corn starch on your scalp or get an overdose of whiteness.

Thank-you for weighing in, ladies! Sounds like it's perfectly usable in dark hair; I shall have to give it a try soon.

I've never tried the baby powder trick, but I have a friend who was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, and she said they would often use baby powder in their hair during halftime at games.

I have used dry shampoos, but they seem to make my hair more greasy by the end of the day. I've tried Sebastian and John Frieda.

Can I ask- did they do this to take the sweat out of their hair? Because I'm looking for something to remove sweat after a workout without having to rinse my hair out and I'd wondering if this would work. Or if you'd get a big horrific mess.

The baby powder trick is really a cheap alternative to dry shampoo, ladies. Whatever you'd use dry shampoo for - removing perspiration and oil, adding volume - you can use baby powder for.

Dry shampoo can be a bit of a drag, it's a good quick fix, but not a good alternative to going one more day without your hair washed.
Baby powder is good for that though.

And yes, baby powder would work wonderfully after a workout.

I have a regular Friday Morning appointment at 9.00 am for a shampoo and set, I have a rinse put through 'Tempting Taffy" by roux, finger-waves and a few pincurls ,my hair is currently in a short bob, so if i have to shampoo it myself i can blow-dry it smooth

my hair, particularly through the winter, is very sensitive to washing and develops nasty flakes. So I wash it about twice a week if I can get away with it. If you ever had trouble with dry scalp, the easiest solution is to stop washing it so often. For the grease I wash it with baking soda. One of the black ladies at work says that at their hairdresser they take out the grease with dawn dish washing soap.
