Re: the Degas, check Bencraft, it's significantly less expensive there.

I didn't care for the way the brim snapped down in the front----looked too droopy---not enough "lift", for lack of a better term. I have not had much luck in the past trying to steam straw hats into the shape I want. However, with this hat a little steaming of the brim caused it to surrender to my wishes!

I do not like a brim with alot of turn up at the back.
Did you just steam it or use the iron?

Re: the Degas, check Bencraft, it's significantly less expensive there.

I went to Bencraft's site, but they don't offer it in the copper color. Also, I stopped at the Hatco Outlet and of course they don't have it, or any of the other new releases, i.e. Milan Strat. Neither of these hats are on Stetson's website for that matter. They're rather bad about keepng their site updated.

I do on some of my wide ribbon felts. But the Strat (felt) seems to look much better with a flatter back brim. Flat overall, I'd say at the risk of repeating myself. Mine should be here on wednesday.

Sorry Rusty--- I missed your post earlier.

I ended up not having to use the iron, althought the steam iron has been a constant companion of mine when messing around with the straight sided dome I got for some of my felt hats. Also for reshaping brims. I am a little nervous using it for straw hats though---especially the the ones with the plasticky coating like the Milan Strat. I'm afraid it will melt! Anyway, to answer your question, I only used steam.

I snapped the brim down just like RBH did & now i like it & i snapped it up all around a touch of steam it sorta flattened out snapped up & i like that better.
either way, better than how the brim was shaped out of the box.

My Strat in sand just arrived from Men's Hats. I will post some photos tomorrow to compare it to an Akubra Capricorn. Some first impressions:

The brim is indeed fairly swoopy as found by others, I could live with it as-is or modify as the material feels light, malleable and easy to tweak. The size is too large for me, by a half-size at least (are you reading this Skyvue?). It's on the verge of being too big to fix with padding. To me, the hat feels like it could deform to a long oval without much trouble. It's a nice looking hat, the airplane pin is plastic --- OK I guess, but a little silly. I notice that the teardrop on mine does not have the pronounced dome in the center. Rather, it has a faint crease front to back like an Optimo, and there is not much of a dome. Still, it looks nice.
