I'd be a bit worried about dryness on the upper back with that surface cracking.

Exactly. Once the leather starts to crack, I don't know of any way to bring it back. It is a continuing degenerative process.

It doesn't look deep though. Steer is pretty rugged. If it were a thin hide, I'd worry. For that price, no brainer. IMHO.
