The G-1 style bi-swing back is tricky...most guys look ok with it (meaning, you don't notice it/it looks flattering), but I always thought I was wearing a triangle.

"Quite large"? That's a diplomatic way of looking at it... They say it's a test jacket, prototypes are often unique (that's another diplomatic way to put it...).

I believe that the Navy specified the bi-swing back (and gussetted underarm) in the M-422 to allow the pilot freedom to swim (after bailing out/ditching of the plane at sea). Now that's what I call "functional"!

I've owned a couple of original AN-J-3 jackets and this collar resembles the Doniger/McGregor Sportswear pattern pretty well. The collar is a little wider, but not extravagantly so.

The other more conventional A-2 type pattern is somewhat smaller.

There's a 1950's Cagleco size 44 G-1 on the 'bay without fur (mouton) on the collar!
Not sure if it's some weird production error or the fur was removed by a previous owner, but quite reminiscent of the AN-J-3.

Yes triple-d, it's a Lost Worlds russet A-2. My favorite!

Very nice! I have been looking through all these threads, and started searching for an A2 or ANJ-3....I'm a tall guy 6'6".....talls aren't plentifull in the used market, so still searching for possibilites........thanks for your reply.

You'd have to define extravagant, as the collars are way different in my eyes. I guess one could use the hot water stuff, but apart from the collars, the pockets in you jackets seem considerably different to me. The hide is fine, the proportions in the Aero jacket seem off to me in comparison to the ones you posted.

Sorry , I don't think that I made myself clear - the collar of the Aero jacket and my old McGregor Sportswear AN-J-3 are similar in profile, albeit the Aero is somewhat more exaggerated in width (the McGregor is far more elegant IMO). Given the hide colour and general features, the Aero looks like it's drawn some inspiration from the capeskin McGregor, but it falls short.

On the other hand, the mil. spec. AN-J-3 (maker unknown) that I sold a while back (goatskin, windflap, epaulettes, etc.) has a neater, albeit large collar profile.

The pockets are indeed different, as are many features in the jackets - there are very few examples of AN-J-3 jackets from which to take patterns, but it's a very practical jacket to wear.
