I will be flying to the Hermosa Beach area for the holiday, having never been to California before. Can any of you folks steer me towards some of "our kind" of stores, so I can lighten my wallet with more very-muchly-needed jackets?
The only thing on my agenda at this point is a BIL will be giving us a tour of the JPL facility.

Thanks, and a merry Christmas to all of you!

Thanks, Scott. Everyone in my neck of the woods keeps telling me that I'm gonna come back with a Michael Jackson "Beat It" jacket. I'll show 'em!
Get one. Eff 'em. This one is close. We can own the clown posse. ;)

JPL is near me too!
If you are here around New Years, Go to the Rose Parade! or at least view the floats up close afterwards. It is crowded, but something special.

You can't beat the weather at the beach in Winter! Rent bikes and ride up and down the strand- a path along the beach that connects Redondo, Manhattan, and Hermosa. The pier at Hermosa is nice for a walk, and drinks. Not sure about your food options though. If you get the chance, explore Venice, Santa Monica, and up the coast a bit. The Getty Center is incredible despite the recent fire. Go online to find out about parking.
@nick123 might be able to tell you about Long Beach and Palos Verdes.

As I recall the weather is incredibly nice near the beach this time of year, and you'll miss at least part of the very cold system enveloping most of the state of Texoma for the next several days. Palos Verdes is a particularly interesting place to cruise through. Are you flying into LAX or John Wayne?

I'm visiting my 'ma in NorCal...it was 32F this morning, and not much warmer down there at the moment! Bring a light jacket, especially if you walk the streets at night.

Go to Craig's Hot Dog on a Stick at the Redondo Beach Pier. My uncle!

It's actually been cold enough to wear jackets here in good ole socal recently.

If you have time, try to make it down to Orange County. It's like LA county except there's parking, you don't fear for your life, it's cleaner, and the beaches are way better among other things :D

Make sure to go to get some Mexican food as well. I have some good suggestions if you need and not to be a cocky SOB, but I do know REAL Mexican food thanks to my fiance's Mexican family.

There are quite a few great shops including Mister Freedom, Self Edge LA, Schott, Butterscotch Long Beach, Snake Oil Provisions, Freenote Cloth, Runabout Goods, and probably more.

I don't know how much driving you are looking to do and I don't know what current state of repair they are in, but Gibson and Barnes is not terrifically far away from LA (by California standards) and the USS Midway museum and the San Diego Air and Space are worth seeing.
