I almost bought that one about 2 bidding cycles back. I am VERY interested to hear about the quality on this one. It looks fabulous! I got my OR instead, but if my bidding had gone higher I would have come back to this one. So glad to see a FL'r take this home.

I ended up not getting this hat. The seller wouldn’t come down from his starting price and I had to factor in the need to have it reblocked to 7 5/8 and a new sweat installed. The numbers just didn’t make sense. Disappointment in vintage hats is something we larger headed folks are used to.

Did you know it was listed at $185 when I first saw it, and the seller has been increasing the price by $5 every time it's re-listed? LOL.

I am just so interested in the terms used on this hat, like "Imported White Fur," and "Moleskin Finish."

I was intrigued too. I asked the owner of a different Thoroughbred here on the Lounge if they were western stiff or old-school Open Road soft. His was of the western variety, but his also wasn’t a bound brim....

I did notice the price creeping up and I occasionally see that “strategy” used by sellers. No idea if it works. I offered him something closer to $100 but he wasn’t interested. Probably best as it would have taken some effort and expense to make it work for me.

Hey Brent et al:
That’s too bad but at least it gave you the chance to awaken this fine old thread. I love it when old threads come back to life especially since sooo many images have been lost due to the Photo_uckit thing!!
An OR is a classic, without question, however this thread makes me wonder, if back in the day were “all” these fine “other than” ORs merely imitators of a Stetson OR, or was the Stetson just one of the boys of that style which we collectors now crown as the “marquee”?
Probably alittle of both. Idk
Anyway, time to look for more “other thans” and...More Pics Please!!!
I think i have a Stetson beaver 50, Stack and maybe a Borsa. We see.
And....More Pics Please!!!
Be well. Bowen

I see the Shudde Bros Houston still has ??? by it since the beginning of the thread.
So here’s mine:
Shudde Bros Houston Pure Beaver.
Pretty pristine, 3” brim, 3/16” trim ribbon, 3/8” ribbon bow. Very nice fairly stiff felt.
Looks like an OR to me.
Be well. Bowen
Ps: i have a Stetson Open Trail that dimensionally is like the OR but it sports a 1” ribbon so i don’t know if it should be on the list.????
B
That sure is a nice one. I like a 3" brim.

Like Bowen, I noticed how many good photos have been lost. It is nice to see this thread as there are so many beautiful examples out there, most not in my size[emoji26]. Here is my Resistol Dalworth.

Thank you Bowen, it is a Seiju Elm. Not sure of the age, it was a graft off of a much older tree. I've had it quite a few years, and done all of the training.

The brim is not bound on the Lion (if that is part of an OR clone requirement -- and we are talking about the same hat). Thanks again for letting it live there for so long. Someday I'll get that direction...
I didn't recall the RE brim but I do recall telling you that it looked like a baby OR. The specs might be slightly undersized too.

Two Resistol Beaver 25's from different decades, neither with any other designation. The newer one with a men's store liner.

A Wormser 10 Star/3X. Someone had already posted one of these but the pics are gone. 3" brim that you could drive nails with.

A 2 1/4" brim Churchill Beaver 25 "Longview".

Edit: I've also got a couple store brands that would fall into this category. The Cowlot Beaver 25 and the Levine Hat Co. Beaver 20.

I have an early Stetson Dakota that has "Moleskin" impressed in the sweat. Not really sure what it meant other than perhaps a finer finish. On some other brands that also use that term, it refers to a suede like finish....
on other matters I too have a couple of OR clones I should post here including a Lion Hats 'Major" and a Dobbs Westward....
