Hey Jonesy:
If you’re wanting a Vintage Borsalino (and who doesn’t) you might try a WTB in the classifieds before you drop $290 on a new one. 7 1/2 or 6 1/2 Punti is a tough size but you never know if you don’t ask. The right audience might be out there and you may save some $$.

What do you think is the answer to Jonesy86's question, Steven?
You would certainly know...

What has greater quality for the money, a modern custom beaver, or a modern Borsalino?

Max, I don't have experience with custom made hats and the felt they use. Borsalino can still make a nice rabbit fur hat but the form and price might be a factor. They have limited number of open crown models. It would be best to have them in hand to make a selection.

Thank you, Steven. Pretty soon I will have an Optimo Silverbelly to compare with some 1950s Borsalinos, as well as other 1930s and 40s felts.

I have asked in the FL if anyone has compared the Optimo Silverbelly with vintage felts, and no one answered.
Now I will form my own opinion.

This hat I bought on eBay just arrived in Texas, but I still have to wait to get it. It came from England.

Max, I think you would need to compare similar felt (fur content, weight, finish) and hat type. For example the Borsalino you just posted is a Curled Brimmed Hat so more stiffener was applied to brim (today you will not see the same level of Curled Brim work). The felt might also be of a heavier weight. The fur content is Rabbit (maybe so mix) and not Beaver so there will be a density difference. Also there will be a difference in the finish.

This mint condition Curled Brim Echter Borsalino is from the late 1920s. The felt is of a heavier weight but the crown is very pliable. You can see there is some Nap to the finish but this intended. My guess is the fur content is mostly Rabbit. As a whole, the hat is at a level you will not see today.

I am looking at a new Como in Navy:

View attachment 126860

I would like to know what the general opinion of the quality/value of these new hats say compared to a custom beaver?

Peace

Hey Jonesy86. I have a lot of modern day Borsalino hats and for the most part very happy with them. The Como is a nice dress hat made from hare felt. Attractive crown to Brim proportions and made to the standards of high end mass production hats of the 21st century. You want, a European style blue hat? Well there it is. Now custom hats are another animal, no pun intended, and you should have one of those too! Can never go wrong with a custom beaver. The vintage Borsalino hats that were produced in the early to mid 20th century during the heyday of hat fashion are in a league of there own: felt, finish, and craftsmanship. You should also own some of those as well. Just my $.02 enjoy the hunt.

I've seen that one. Good get, Max. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Only thing that has me wondering though is the back seam on that sweatband, which seems a bit off. I wonder what that's about.
Yes, I noticed that too, and there is a similar one by the same seller and for the same price that seems to be in a better condition, but the sweat on this one says "Simeon Zlateff"... Steven told me that is desireable, and it helps to place the hat in time, so I chose this one.

If I hadn't had trouble with those PayPal guys I would have bought the second one as well, but as it is I have to ask my friend Jim in Chicago to send my Paypal payments, and I am choosing very carefully so I won't have to bother him as much.

There is a Mexican saying I like a lot: "Never lean too hard on your friends or your horses."

Sweet hat. That little spacer in the seam is to give it another 1/8 of an inch width. You can open it up a little more or close it up - the hatter in Escandon can adjust it for you for 400 pesos. Puede ser menos si no eres gringo :)

Hahahaha! Thank you, Daniel!
LOL! Y si nomás soy medio gringo?

I was born in Acapulco, and lived there until I was six years old, so I can revert to an Acapulqueño accent.
It is useful sometimes, like when you get in a cab. Taxi drivers charge Acapulqueños half of what they charge Chilangos. :)
