Vicenza vs Goatskin

Hello, after owning and loving both my vicenza jackets (Boardracer , dark seal) and Thirties Deluxe HB (seal) Im on the hunt for another great Aero jacket!

The vicenza leather is ideally suited for my local SoCal (Souther California U.S.A.) weather but I am now considering a goatskin Boardracer with a collar... AKA an Aero Seven. Can anyone please share with me:

1. Their experiences with goatskin and how it compares with vicenza.
2. Any other leather I should consider.
3. Any other relevant comments or suggestions....

TIA, Joe

I've had both. The goat is slightly heavier than the Vicenza I have owned. But I imagine they both range around 2.5 oz with some batches being slightly under or over. I live in a place with similar weather to SoCal, except we have a colder winter. Both hides are often too heavy to enjoy in our weather. I have found that 2.2 oz is more useful to me here and if you can get a lighter goat hide this is pretty versatile hide.

Oddly I searched this forum unsuccessfully but then did a Google search which brought me back to an informative thread here on FDL. Still, any info would be appreciated. Thanks.... Joe

Can't answer your question as i have never seen the Aero goat, but try using google to search "goat vs vicenza fedora lounge" in my experience it works a lot better to search that way rather than using the built in forum search.

Good luck.

I’ve got both. The first observation is that hides of any variety (FQHH, Goat, Vicenza etc) can ALL vary significantly from batch to batch. I had a goat slim half belt years ago that felt like cardboard. Pretty sure it was an anomaly (or perhaps the prior owner did something to it).
the goat sunburst-based jacket that I have now is one of my most comfortable jackets in the entire cupboard. the goat is pretty easy to wear & pretty much bulletproof.
It also just laughs at rain (can’t say the same about Vicenza). you e already got the Vicenza, add something different to the stable!

I had a jacket in the Blue-Black Goat from the old Levi collaboration and it was thinner and somewhat stiffer than most of the Vicenza jackets I've owned.

It was a nice lighter weight hide (from memory lighter than Vicenza) but I didn't particularly like the pebbly grain on it....I do kinda regret selling it on but it was just a bit too short on me so probably for the best.

Not sure how that particular batch compares to their regular goat though.

Any chance of elaborating on the water resistance of goat vs Vincenza?, thanks

Well, I’m probably not the most well-educated here in regards to tanning methods. Basically though, a veg-tanned product will not have the water repellent properties of a chrome tanned equivalent.
Vicenza is a veg-tanned hide, whilst the goat is (I think) a chrome-tanned product.
I’m sure that someone will chime in with more details.
