It's still bespoke - made to order to your preferences - just not as personal as being measured up.
I think that in today's world, this is about as bespoke as you get. And really, for a leather jacket, it's fine. A tux or suit of course is a different beast, so what we get as bespoke is indeed good enough I think...

it's 20th century outsourcing business model in goatskin/sheep's clothing/cowhide... hopefully they will make enough cash to move the manufacturing stateside and to offer REAL leather jackets.

Not to me. At the most it could be made to measure (MTM) but not bespoke. I really doubt every piece of the jacket is modified to your measurements, rather they might have some patterns and they mix and match those to get closer to the measurements provided. I really doubt they cut every jacket from personal measurements making new patterns for each client.

Every piece? Likely not. But it's not needed either. One picks every detail - hide, lining, zips, buttons, etc. I've had everything I wanted for each custom jacket and to me, that's bespoke. I won't get into a semantic augment over it - not really important.

Whenever I hear about what options exist for the "first time leather jacket buyer" to buy a shitty jacket these days thanks to online marketing I find myself blessing the memory of those days spent in Army n' Navy surplus stores with my grand-dad buying WW2 stuff for next to nothing, and maybe a little regret over having let go of a lot of things I could have financed a LOT of travel with if I had them around now.

Bespoke just means made to order ( the opposite of off the rack) and could just mean asking for longer sleeves and goes right through to being fully measured by a tailor. It's a continuum and made to measure is a form of bespoke.

There's no point being too concrete about these definitions. What matters here is that the jackets are being pitched to the wrong market. Bespoke or not is the least of their problems.

So I see several things here happening, and with the knowledge the Robbie will be reading what we write, I would like to encourage him and his brother in thier endevors. It takes a lot of courage to do what they are doing, starting small and all. And anyone under 40 who is interested enough in a leather jacket to own, let alone start a company to produce (market) them deserves support in my humble opinion.

Think about a nearly extinct entity in the USA: Wison's Leathers. They still exist in outlet malls, but even there a percentage of what they sell isn't skin at all. Now it's true after being exposed to Johnson, Lost Worlds, Schott, Vanson and many others, I really don't have much intrest in Wilson's or any "mall type" jacket. Here these folks are offering at least some customization options with thier products, and have some intersting styles. At least it gets more people back wearing leathers again, and then being open to an upgrade at a later time.

That said, producing them in India, in a mass-production form is cost effective, but now what I prefer anymore. It takes a lot to do what Lost Words does, and initial investment to a small, niche market may never realize a full payoff at this point. Instead, I think they are wise to keep marketing to those who might look for a Wilson's - type jacket, although I hope they could get thier hands on some good Shinki or Horween hide that is well broken in...the lambskin would quickly go away :)

it is not bespoke unless the gentleman measuring you has british accent:p

I think it is equally important for someone in the company to advice their client when they see a weird/ unproportional numbers on the measurement form, that brown/ bronze jacket is correctly sized everywhere but the body length, maybe the customer wanted and seemed to be happy with that, but I think the company should give advice or knock some sense to that customer, saving them from their own mistake.

I have handled and owned Wilson and Gap leathers that were well made and wore like iron. Sure they were older versions. We can sometimes be a bit prejudicial about other options. Many of the great vintage jackets that inspired collectors did not use great leather or were all that well made - Brimaco and Brooks spring to mind.

To throw this to Savile Row, when I've bought suits from Ede & Ravenscroft, I've gone with what they describe as made-to-measure. This allowed me to pick the cloth, lining, and adjust the fit to a small extent, on a standard size. With bespoke, it's a suit built on the person as the *dummy*, to their exact frame. My understanding is that unless you're an unusual shape, you don't really need the latter

Does anyone know if those Wilson's jackets were made by the same company that made baseball gloves and other sports equipment back in the '50's and '60's? I've always wondered about that.

That's a useful distinction. When I worked in the corporate world some years ago, the process you're describing at Ede & Ravenscroft was pretty much the standard way of getting a suit made. I've noticed, however, that stores offering the same service these days are describing it as "bespoke."

As has been stated... I think that TFL is not the target market for this company. Probably anyone here who bought this jacket would be swapping it in soon for LW, Schott, etc.
pretty quickly. But there's a big price difference there, and what they are offering is better than mall quality IMHO. So I guess the bottom line is that no, TFL cannot recommend
a purchase from them as it it unlikely the jacket will become a cherished part of your wardrobe. HOWEVER that's not saying the company itself has a bad business model or
has anything wrong with it. A brand new, decent quality leather jacket for $300 is significantly cheaper than even the cheapest new one, and used jackets can be a gamble fit-wise.

I second somebody's opinion there that there is a possibility down the road they could become more of an artisan shop, since the passion is obviously there.

I want to echo Ton312's statement and thank Robbie for taking time to reply. As many have already said we at TFL are not the target audience, but you responded anyway. Thank you. If leather jackets truly are a passion of yours I recommend that you spend some time on this forum because you will find more knowledge (and opinion) here about leather jackets than you are likely to anywhere else. Happy New Year!

Im a little late in replying to this but I would advise against this.

This forum is very narrow minded in their "knowledge". Most of the jackets I see on here I would never own.

Im a huge Malenotti Belstaff/Matchless fan and the people on this forum call them mall jackets lol. Not everyone wants bi-swing back bulky stiff looking jackets that take 5 years to break in.

I haven't been a Forum member for that long but I think describing it as very narrow minded is absurd. There is a constant discussion on the merits of workmanship and materials used and not always on the output of premier manufacturers.

They are called that b/c that's what they look like. You could just as well slap a Hugo Boss label on everything offered from both those makers. All they've done is increase the price tag.
